Abraham Lincoln called "Billy" Herndon “my man always above all other men on the globe". After Lincoln's assassination, Herndon and co-author Jesse Weik conducted many interviews with Lincoln's family and friends for this biography. The result - although not without flaws - has been recognized as one of the most important biographies of the Great Emancipator ever published. This volume covers the period of Lincoln's life in New Salem, Illinois, as a young man, through his love affair with Ann Rutledge, becoming a lawyer, his marriage to Mary Todd, and service in Congress.

A biography of Abraham Lincoln by his long-time law partner, William Herndon and Herndon's collaborator, Jesse Weik. The book is notable for its extensive use of first hand interviews (unusual for its time) and for Herndon's overriding determination to convey an affectionate but frank picture of his law partner's life story as remembered by Lincoln's family, friends, associates and neighbors.
