Ist es im idyllischen Saint-Denis zu Kriegsverbrechen gekommen? Bruno begibt sich auf Spurensuche in dunkle Zeiten, doch auch in der Gegenwart wird er dringend gebraucht: Internationale Besucher müssen mit Köstlichkeiten aus dem Périgord bewirtet werden, und die malerische Vézère schwillt zu einem reißenden Strom an, der ganz Saint-Denis in Gefahr bringt.

Bruno nimmt uns mit auf einen Streifzug durch Saint-Denis, schlichtet kleine Nachbarschaftszwists und großes Gezeter am Markt und kümmert sich um allerlei missliche Angelegenheiten. Nur einmal gerät er ins Schwitzen: Als sein Freund, der Chef des beliebtesten Restaurants der Stadt, kurz vor einer großen Jubiläumsfeier ins Krankenhaus muss, bittet er Bruno, für ihn einzuspringen. Bruno zögert, atmet tief durch, krempelt die Ärmel hoch – und zaubert ein Festmahl und ganz nebenbei ein großartiges Lesevergnügen.

Bruno steckt mitten in den Vorbereitungen für das alljährliche Konzert in Saint-Denis – die Folkband Les Troubadours soll auftreten, die mit ihrem neuesten Hit "A Song for Catalonia" gerade in Spanien für Zündstoff sorgt. Hinweise auf einen geplanten Mordanschlag werden laut. Doch Bruno hat auch anderweitig alle Hände voll zu tun: Er ist zuständig für das Buffet des Tennisturniers, ein Wildschwein wird über offenem Feuer gebraten, es wird gefeiert und geschlemmt.

Brunos Vorgesetzten lässt ein Mordfall bis heute nicht los. Im Wald bei Saint-Denis hatte man die Leiche eines jungen Mannes gefunden, die nie identifiziert werden konnte. Bei einem Besuch im Prähistorischen Museum in Les Eyzies sieht Bruno, dass sich aus Knochenfunden rekonstruieren lässt, wie ein Mensch zu Lebzeiten aussah. Er schlägt vor, dieses Verfahren auch bei dem ungelösten Mordfall zu versuchen. Damit beginnt endlich die Suche nach dem Mörder.

Im Périgord leben die Menschen lang und glücklich. Darauf spekuliert auch der Witwer Driant, als er seinen ganzen Besitz auf ein lebenslanges Wohnrecht in einer schicken Seniorenresidenz setzt. Er weiß nicht, dass das Roulette-Rad tausende Kilometer weit entfernt von einem russischen Oligarchen gedreht wird. Kurz darauf ist Driant tot - rien ne va plus. Nur Bruno ahnt das große Spiel dahinter. Seine erste Spur führt ins malerische Château einer Rocklegende.

Bruno ist neu Mitglied einer Wein- und Trüffelgilde, eine große Ehre. Doch lange kann er die pâtés und Monbazillacs nicht verkosten, denn er wird an einen Unfallort gerufen. Auf dem Anwesen des ältesten Gildenmitglieds ist eine Studentin, die in dessen Gemäldesammlung recherchierte, nach einem nächtlichen Rendezvous zu Tode gestürzt. Oder war es in Wahrheit Mord? Eine Spur führt Bruno zum Schloss einer berühmten Tänzerin und Résistance-Heldin: Josephine Baker.

Bruno steht vor einer ungewohnten Herausforderung: Er soll in Pamelas Kochschule Feriengästen lokale Spezialitäten beibringen. Die Messer sind gewetzt, die frischen Zutaten bereit, doch die prominenteste Kursteilnehmerin fehlt: die junge Frau eines britischen Geheimdienstoffiziers, die sich auf Empfehlung ihrer Stieffamilie im Périgord erholen wollte.
