Danger lurks everywhere, as hope blows in the breeze. Sorcerer's apprentice Samara is elated by the rescue of the dragons, but that feeling is soon squashed as the risks of being caught increase. Not knowing who in the Sacred Flame coterie is involved has Samara on edge, especially when she and her dragon, Ulrieg, are spotted in places they shouldn't be. Powerful head sorceress Callista embarks on a journey to find a sacred crystal to add to her collection, taking Samara and a couple of other apprentices.

After Samara makes a shocking discovery, something must be done. She can't leave the coterie, or her family will again face poverty. If she stays, she must discover who is committing these horrendous acts. Two senior commanders who patrol the borders of the human and elven kingdoms visit. The young apprentices soon discover that these two aren't as friendly as their instructors. They employ all kinds of sadistic mind games and revel in inflicting pain. In the trials the apprentices face, lives are lost, and many more are on the line.

Samara is chosen to train with the Sacred Flame coterie—an elite magical order where apprentices bond with familiars to become unstoppable sorcerers. For her, this is more than an honor—it's her family's only way out of poverty. But there's a catch. Samara has no familiar. Without one, she's as good as powerless. Her opponents tower over her, her future grows uncertain, and her failure could doom not just herself, but those she loves. Then she meets a grumpy dragon with a sharp tongue. He doesn't want a human companion—but fate might not care.
