Lionel Page hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, all die Scharlatane und Wunderheiler zu entlarven, die anständigen Leuten das Geld aus der Tasche ziehen wollen. An übernatürliche Phänomene glaubt der gerissene Reporter nicht. Doch als er eines Tages in New York ein verschollenes Manuskript von Edgar Allan Poe aufspüren soll, muss Lionel feststellen, dass offenbar nicht alles, worüber der Horror-Großmeister geschrieben hat, seiner Fantasie entsprungen ist – und dass Lionel selbst dem Übernatürlichen bereits näher gekommen ist, als er geahnt hat.
