Nach der ersten, eher ernüchternden Diskussionsrunde machen sich Holmes und Watson mit der Geografie der Stadt Bari näher vertraut. Im Zuge eines Gesprächs über die Vor- und Nachteile nordamerikanischer Stadtplanung taucht auch die Frage nach dem Platz der Vereinigten Staaten am Tisch der Großmächte auf.

In Don Vitos Taverne treffen Holmes und Watson schließlich auf die übrigen Mitglieder der britischen Delegation. Zu dieser gehören Botschafter Savile als ihr Leiter, der schottische Archäologe und Mediziner McCallum sowie Dekan Davidson als Vertreter der Anglikanischen Kirche.

Nach den abgeschlossenen Untersuchungen entbrennt abermals der Streit zwischen den internationalen Delegierten, wer denn nun berechtigten Anspruch auf die Reliquien vorweisen kann. Doch dann erscheint ein uniformierter Polizist mit einer schockierenden Nachricht.

An der Universität gibt es einen Erfolg: Einer der beiden bildlich bekannten Verschwörer ist als Medizinstudent inskribiert. An der Meldeadresse ist seine Wohnung jedoch verlassen. Holmes gewinnt trotzdem eine wichtige Einsicht.

Watson und McCallum öffnen die alte Metalltruhe mit den Gebeinen des Nikolaus von Myra. Es dauert Stunden, bis die beiden Mediziner die einzelnen Knochen zu einem fast vollständigen Skelett zusammensetzen können. Danach präsentieren sie den Delegierten ihre ersten Ergebnisse und Erkenntnisse.

Neben Aspekten, die den seinerzeitigen Gesundheitszustand der vor eineinhalbtausend Jahren verstorbenen Person betreffen, kann McCallum durchaus überzeugende Indizien zu deren Identität zusammentragen. Schließlich kann er verkünden, dass ohne Zweifel die Gebeine des Heiligen Nikolaus vorliegen.
