James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on the 2nd February 1882, in Dublin, into a middle-class family, and the eldest of ten surviving siblings. After publishing a poetry volume, ‘Chamber Music’, in 1907, his short story collection ‘The Dubliners’, in 1914, helped establish his talent in the rapidly changing world. Although far from home Joyce’s literary heart and works were set in his recollections of Dublin. Characters are close resemblances of family and friends and indeed enemies.

Das weckt die Neugierde des anderen und sie vereinbaren sich nach dem Date nochmal zu treffen, um über den natürlich erfolgreichen noch ausstehenden „Abschuss“ zu plaudern.

Ein Dubliner Junge verabredet sich mit seinem besten Kumpel, um außerhalb des ihnen langweiligen Schuluniversums sich irgendwo im Unbekannten herumzutreiben und spannende Abenteuer zu erleben. Mit Steinschleuder und ein paar Pennies ausgerüstet ziehen sie los, stellen ein paar zerlumpten Mädchen nach, überlegen sich ein paar noch kleinere Jungen zu massakrieren, jagen eine Katze und ruhen sich schließlich bei einer Johannisbeerlimonade aus.

Ein Dubliner Junge sieht sich mit schwerwiegenden Problemen konfrontiert. Zum einen hat er sich in den Kopf gesetzt, unbedingt einen großen Bazar besuchen zu müssen und zum anderen spielen seine Hormone verrückt, weil er nicht weiß wie er das Interesse einer Klosterschülerin gewinnen kann. Wenigstens der Plan mit dem Bazarbesuch funktioniert und so tritt er tapfer alleine eine Zugreise an und betritt mutig den pulsierenden Mittelpunkt des öffentlichen Gesellschaftslebens.

Die Hauptfigur dieser Geschichte ist ein Dubliner Junge, dessen tristes Dasein im monotonen Alltag durch die lose Freundschaft mit einem Priester etwas aufgelockert wird. Durch diesen Gottesdiener bekommt er Bruchstücke religiös-kirchlicher Standard-Vorgänge vermittelt, mit denen er eigentlich weder etwas anzufangen noch nützlich einzuordnen weiß. Als dieser Priester stirbt, nimmt der als Ich-Erzähler auftretende Junge ebenfalls an dem Gedächtnistreffen für den Verstorbenen teil, bei dem die Begräbniskosten geklärt und Gedenkworte ausgetauscht werden.

It presents a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century.
