La confusión de géneros que se usa en la obra es un buen recurso para producir situaciones cómicas: Viola se disfraza como un hombre para protegerse y conseguir trabajo con el duque Orsino, pero su disfraz va a causar toda clase de enredos y por otro lado Shakespeare parece hacer un guiño a los que consideran la sacrosanta heterosexualidad un tanto aburrida.
