This story picks up a year after the end of The Return of Tarzan and finds Tarzan and Jane together with a son, beginning to build a life together in Africa. But of course, Tarzan doesn't stay out of danger for long, and soon his previous enemies are back to haunt him and kidnap his son. As the villains carry out their evil plan, Tarzan has to rely on his jungle upbringing and team up with the beasts of the jungle to rescue his beloved family.

The story begins in the midst of World War I, in the middle of naval attacks between the armies of various nations. On a submarine that had been captured in the English Channel, the combatants from several countries fight for the ownership of the vessel. After a series of unfortunate circumstances, the submarine is sent off-course into the South Pacific and then is even further rerouted to Antarctica.

Questo romanzo franco-indiano fa parte di una serie di romanzi storici scritti da Judith Gautier. Questa visse in un ambiente coltissimo ed ha conosciuto direttamente le lingue e i costumi orientali. Non sorprende quindi che si sia dedicata ad un genere di letteratura esotica nella quale è rimasta insuperabile. L'autrice ha creato un'arte tutta personale e riesce a suscitare nel lettore una viva attesa per lo svolgersi della storia, non diminuita dalle descrizioni storiche e naturalistiche.
