Holmes und Watson kehren nach London zurück. In der Temple Church muss der letzte Hinweis auf den Aufbewahrungsort des Heiligen Grals zu finden sein. Schließlich kommt es zur Konfrontation mit den deutschen Agenten, die tödlich zu enden droht.

Holmes und Watson suchen an der Atlantikküste eine Meereshöhle auf, die der Legende nach als Wohnort des Druiden und Zauberers Merlin diente. Zwar können die beiden den nächsten Hinweis entdecken, doch als die Flut einsetzt, geraten sie in Lebensgefahr.

Nach der Ausschaltung der deutschen Agenten gelingt auch die Befreiung von Professor Troy. Vater Abraham weiht Holmes und Watson zunächst in das jahrhundertealte Geheimnis der Gralshüter ein, bevor er sie an den Aufbewahrungsort des Heiligen Kelches führt.

Mit letzter Kraft schafft es Watson schwimmend an die rettende Küste, während Holmes im Meer vermisst bleibt. Auf dem Fußmarsch zur Polizeistation schwört sich Watson, den Fall auch allein zu lösen und Rache an den Verantwortlichen zu nehmen.

Im Krankenhaus weichen Watson und Holmes nicht von Marys Seite, während Lestrade den verhafteten Sommerset ins Polizeigefängnis überstellt. Als Mary endlich das Bewusstsein wiedererlangt, kann sie sich an nichts erinnern.

In der Baker Street bricht ein Feuer aus. Holmes und Watson werden am Brandort von einem Mann angesprochen, der sich als Stabschef einer mächtigen kriminellen Organisation zu erkennen gibt und Holmes vor eine lebensbedrohliche Wahl stellt.
