Das im Jahre 1835 von Elias Lönnrot aufgezeichnete Nationalepos Kalevala basiert auf mündlichen Überlieferungen der finnischen Mythologie und gehört zu den wichtigsten Werken der finnischen Literatur. Der Text des Kalevalas besteht aus 22.795 Versen in fünfzig Gesängen, auch Runen genannt. Die deutsche Übersetzung ist von Anton Schiefner und stammt aus dem Jahre 1852. Das im Originaltext verwendete Versmaß besteht aus insgesamt acht Silben, dem trochäischen Tetrameter.
