Unfortunately, what I put into this pod is draining me of time and energy that I need elsewhere, so welcome to an Infinite Hiatus, and super sorry if this is your first listen.

  • EP 7 - POV: You Enjoy This Episode (I Didn't)
    Feb 17 2025

Write, Read, Question is a weekly podcast where I put to the test writing advice, tips, and techniques while writing my own novel.

In this late, sleepy episode, we talk about the different types of Literary Point of View (POV), including the choices between First person or Third Person, Limited or Omniscient, Singular or Multiple, and Past or Present. We also go over how each of these choices can affect your other choices and narration, as well as some examples of classic and modern novels for further reading.

Now it's time for me to go play Avowed.

    Feb 10 2025

In this week's episode, we talk about the seven different types of literary conflict (Man, Self, Society, Nature, Supernatural, Fate, and Technology), what they are, how they show up in stories, how I'm planning on using them in my story, and why conflict as a concept is one of the best ways to make your story engaging.

  • EP 5 - The Basics (and Everything Else) of A Story
    Feb 3 2025

Write, Read, Question is a weekly podcast where I put to the test writing advice, tips, and techniques while writing my own novel.

In this week's episode, we talk about the four absolutely necessary cornerstones of a successful story (plot, characters, conflict, and intent), how to judge for yourself what other pieces should occupy your focus (theme, POV, backstory, etc), and what details you're probably okay to leave until later.

Oh, and I lament about having to change story ideas for the novel I'm writing. But it's a change that should result in a stronger product.

  • EP 4 - The 80% Rule (AKA Huge Grains of Salt)
    Jan 27 2025

Write, Read, Question is a weekly podcast where I put to the test writing advice, tips, and techniques while writing my own novel.

In this week's episode, we talk about our final guideline for improving our writing: the 80% Rule. Essentially, any advice, tropes, rules, guidelines, suggestions, and formulas should be taken as "80% of the time, or more" rather than "always" or "never."

We also get a sneak peak at upcoming topics for the next few months, and our intrepid host slightly loses his mind from lack of sleep.

    Jan 20 2025

Write, Read, Question is a weekly podcast where I put to the test writing advice, tips, and techniques while writing my own novel.

In this week's episode, we talk about our second guideline to improving our writing: following Poe's Law. It states that to make your novel the best, every aspect of it must be intentionally crafted to point towards and support your story’s effect. We also go over three questions you can ask yourself while writing and editing to help keep you on track in this guideline.
