Season 3 Episode 20

Today’s podcast is a rather sombre one, as we come together to celebrate the life and times of my old mate, dear friend, and colleague Martin Weavers — the much-loved co-host of Who’s Tom & Dick.

Martin sadly lost his battle with Stage 4 lung cancer earlier this week, surrounded by his family, listening to his famous tunes — and yes, it did include the Bay City Rollers.

Martin and I knew each other for well over 30 years and formed a partnership filled with incredible chemistry and laughter. Together on the podcast, we shared not only stories and insights into health, illness, and resilience, but also the joy of everyday life — news, music, hobbies, and the kind of banter only old friends can deliver.

Martin brought his unique voice, humour, and spirit to every episode, bravely speaking about his own journey with Stage 4 lung cancer as he fought with courage, honesty, and that unmistakable glint in his eye.

His passion for good music — especially the classics — endeared him to listeners, and his ability to find laughter even in hard times defined the very soul of our show.

Today we honour not just a brilliant co-host, but a true friend who made every moment richer for those who knew him.

As we welcome in the New Year, Patrick opens this special episode of Who’s Tom & Dick with a slightly different format. Martin is sadly not with us today as he continues to recover from his recent illness and is currently battling laryngitis. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back behind the mic very soon.

Patrick is joined by one of America’s leading oncologists Dr Usifar for an open, honest, and incredibly informative conversation designed to empower listeners with knowledge, clarity, and reassurance.

“Martin’s Medical Mayhem: The Plot Thickens”

In this week’s episode, we catch up on what can only be described as Martin’s trilogy of unfortunate health events—a saga that started calmly enough with a routine “Well Man” examination and rapidly unravelled into something straight out of a hospital drama.

First came the Achilles disaster. One wrong move, one loud snap, and suddenly Martin is strapped into a moon-boot, sentenced to eight long weeks of hobbling around like a budget Stormtrooper. Spirits high, mobility low.

Then, just as he was adjusting to life at half speed, a routine blood test decided to throw in a plot twist. What should have been a quick in-and-out appointment turned into a red-flag phone call from the GP, an urgent referral, and whispers of a chest infection with possible pneumonia. Cue the MRI tests, scans, monitoring, and a diagnosis that takes a nasty turn no one expected.

We break down the timeline, the symptoms, the worry, and of course—Martin’s own colourful retelling of events. From limping into clinics to being told off by nurses, to unexpected twists in the test results, this episode has the perfect mix of humour and heart.

We’re talking about 21 Young Hearts Café — a remarkable new Community Interest Cafe with a mission that’s as powerful as it is heart-warming. Their goal? To encourage, empower, and support young people with disabilities by helping them step confidently into the workforce. And they’re not doing this through theory… they’re doing it through opportunity.

At the centre of their vision is a brilliant idea: a fully-operational community café in Martlesham Heath, open six days a week, serving great coffee, tasty refreshments, and something money can’t buy — real training, real confidence, and real inclusion.

Here, volunteers and trainees don’t just help out… they thrive. They follow structured programmes, linked to apprenticeship pathways, to build essential life and workplace skills — from food preparation and customer service to handling money, teamwork, and stepping proudly into independence.

21 Young Hearts is more than a café. It’s a launchpad. A safe, supportive, energising environment where young people with disabilities get to shine, contribute, and feel part of something bigger.
