Part 2: Survival Skills Aren't Always Life Skills

Why do people who grew up in chaos so often find calm unbearable? Part 2 picks up with that question and works through what it looks like when a survival response becomes a personality: the family dinner where you're tracking everyone's mood, the partner who goes silent when a voice is raised, the household run like a security detail. Then the centerpiece of the series: the skills that kept you alive in a dangerous environment are not the same skills that build a good life in a safe one, and nobody sends a memo when the job changes. We close with six things people get wrong about all of this, including turning trauma into the explanation for everything and diagnosing everyone at the table. Continued in Part 3.

Part 1: How the Alarm Gets Set

What if some of the things you dislike most about yourself started as ways your brain learned to protect you? In the first part of this three-part episode, we look at why so many people are still running a program built for a place they no longer live. We explain the stress response in plain language, why it's built for speed rather than accuracy, and how repeated exposure to danger lowers the threshold until a neutral face or a quiet room reads as a threat. Then we sort the solid science from the social-media version of fight, flight, freeze, and fawn, and show what each one looks like at low volume in ordinary life. Continued in Part 2.

  • Understanding Trauma Responses
    Aug 19 2026

    Trauma responses are often misunderstood.

We call people “dramatic,” “difficult,” “controlling,” “shut down,” or “too sensitive” without stopping to ask a much more important question: What did this person’s nervous system learn it had to do to survive?

In this episode of the Unbroken Voices Podcast, I take a closer look at trauma responses and what is actually happening beneath the behaviors we tend to judge from the outside.

Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn are not character flaws. They are protective responses. And sometimes those responses continue showing up long after the original danger is gone. The brain and body can become remarkably good at protecting us, even when that protection starts interfering with the life we are trying to build.

We talk about hypervigilance, avoidance, emotional shutdown, people-pleasing, anger, and why trauma can leave someone reacting to the present through lessons learned in the past.

Understanding a trauma response does not mean excusing every behavior. It means recognizing where the behavior may be coming from so healing can involve more than simply telling someone to “get over it.”

Because trauma is not just about what happened.

Sometimes, it is about what your mind and body learned to do afterward.

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences
    Aug 13 2026

In recent days, Unbroken Voices has received quite a few questions about ACEs: what they are, why they matter, and how experiences in childhood can continue to affect us later in life.

For those who have been curious, our latest podcast episode takes a deeper look at ACEs, including how childhood adversity can influence the brain, nervous system, physical health, relationships, and addiction recovery.

My skills as a podcaster are still very much a work in progress, but the information behind this episode is solid, and the topic is an important one. I hope this helps answer some of the questions many of you have been asking and makes a complicated subject a little easier to understand.

Here is our latest Unbroken Voices podcast release.

Trauma can shape how we think, react, trust, connect, and cope, but it does not have to define who we become. In this episode of the Unbroken Voices Podcast, Ryan Vannatter explores how survival responses develop, why triggers can feel so powerful, and how people can reclaim their identity through awareness, accountability, support, boundaries, and healing.
