• Parenting and Politics
    Feb 2 2024
Co-hosts, Chris and Shante, have a conversation about politics and how parents can help direct their children's thoughts on a healthy view of it. They are very clear in pointing out that they are not siding with a political party but in general, have a standard in how they approach talking about people and opposing views. Their fear of the current political climate is that our children are hearing a lot of opinions. When they look to leaders and feel like they can't find the truth, it disgusts them a little and they want to have nothing to do with it. There are 3 rules Chris and Shante used in their home around the subject of politics: Value the person over the politics. This means every person has value. You don't have to agree with them for them to have value. You can fight an injustice and still treat the person as if they have value. Disagreements do not have to equal a dislike or rejection of the whole person. In short, attack the issue, not the person Right is right and wrong is wrong. We don't side with a person in such a way that we ignore fault or disagree with a person in such a way that we ignore when they are correct. Be the change where we are. This means that you don't have to put all your hope on who sits in a government office. We would love to hear from you. • The Parenting Trap of Comparison (AKA Comparenting)
    Jan 27 2024
In this episode, co-hosts, Chris and Shante, share thoughts on comparison and how they see it as a real problem in the parenting journey. With the wide range of opinions and resources that are available via the internet and social media, it is easier than ever to compare yourself, your thoughts, and your actions to others. If we are not careful, we can find ourselves overwhelmed and trying to do all the things at once. When this happens, we may be forcing things that don't fit our family or children or just sitting in judgment of others. Neither is helpful. If there was any advice to be given it is: 1. Find the sweet spot where you are getting it right and nurture that thing in your family. Then find one or two things that you'd like to get better with and focus on them. Shut the rest of the noise out and really focus on your family and your values and the voices that line up with those things. 2. And as always, assure your children of your love, keep showing up, and circle back when you get it wrong. Let us know your thoughts. • Parenting When You Feel Like You Are Failing
    Jan 18 2024
Co-hosts, Chris and Shante, are back for Season 2 of Two Parents and A Microphone. They are kicking off with a topic that every parent has dealt with and answering the question, "How do you parent when you feel like you are failing?". While they have never claimed to be gods or gurus, they do share some pretty good advice that has helped and continues to help them in moments when it can feel they are failing. The four key points are: 1. Separate the feelings from your identity. 2. Hold space knowing that you are not your child's everything. 3. Stop comparing. 4. Hold close to your values while also working to preserve the relationship. Listen in for the full conversation to hear each explained. • Parenting Through The Transition Stages
    Oct 26 2023

Co-hosts, Chris and Shante, have a #raw #unscripted #conversation about #transition stages of parenting. It’s #fun and #upbeat while giving the audience something to ponder. #ThinkAboutIt

The hosts welcome Maria Morris, a Pastoral Counselor, pre-licensed Therapist, and Certified Life Coach. She practices at the Therapy Resource Group. You can find out more about her in the “Meet The Team” section of their site https://therapyresourcegroup.org/about-us/

Maria talks with Chris and Shante and helps them explore ways to #navigate #parenting through the many transition seasons of #childhood.  They spend a lot of time discussing the transition of the later years because it seems to be when we have little to no #control over our children but still a lot of responsibility for their well-being.

They also discuss how to tell the difference between a #normal transition and when something deeper may be happening.

They end the conversation by telling parents how to deal with the transition.

Control what you can and let go of what you can’t. Your parenting journey will look different than others. We should not put society’s standards as expectations on our children; however, there are developmental milestones that can help guide us.

Get off the internet. Start at an early age, OR NOW, to help your child know they are safe.

Big Idea: Transition stages are going to happen. Get a good community for support. Buckle up. Don’t take it personally, unless it’s personal.

There is a contest for 2 tickets to a 4DX movie experience. The contest ends December 31, 2023 at 11:59 pm. You can get details and enter here https://forms.gle/vkwsK971i3kkuZko8

  • The Sex Talk
    Oct 5 2023

Co-hosts, Chris and Shante, have a #raw #unscripted #conversation about #sex and #pornography and how they have educated their children on those topics. While #serious in nature, they keep it  #upbeat while giving the audience something to ponder. #ThinkAboutIt

Chris and Shante ensure that their conversations are not framed to bring shame. In fact, it comes from their own experience with sexual brokenness.

This may be the very best conversation to yet come from Two Parents and a Microphone. The hosts do not claim to have all the answers or have done everything correctly. They do, however, believe strongly in framing sex as good and worth protecting.

They mention a free download available that has 8 Best Practices To Talk to Your Kids About Sex and Pornography and an Electronic Usage Policy they used in their house. You can find the download here.

    A few main points:

An equipped child is better for the world than an #innocent #child. As #parents, it is our job to equip our kids with #truth.

People are not products and therefore we should not objectify them.

It’s not about good or bad but rather what is healthy and unhealthy.

#Healthy sex is about honoring humanity more than it is about not doing something bad.

To the pure all things are pure.

  • Are We Parents Or Imposters?
    Sep 13 2023

    Co-hosts, Chris and Shante, have a #raw #unscripted #conversation about #imposter syndrome. It’s #fun and #upbeat while giving the audience something to ponder. #ThinkAboutIt

They contemplate the #question: “Is it that your #children see you as an imposter or that you see yourself that way?”

While the #question can’t be answered for how the kids see them, Chris and Shante agree that they have struggled with imposter syndrome in their #parenting. They noted specific examples of how #insecurities have played into imposter feelings. The discussion gives the audience a front row to vulnerability as the hosts share their failures. To bring balance to the #conversation, the hosts also share where they found success. Although not a #perfect science, the examples offer hope for parents trying to get out of the imposter cycle and be confident in their leadership.

The Big Idea: While parenting pokes holes in us, raises our insecurities, and exposes our deficiencies, vulnerability and circling back to correct personal mistakes help us develop as leaders so we feel less like imposters.

  • Parents, Is It Nature Or Is It Nurture?
    Aug 31 2023

Co-hosts, Chris and Shante bring on a guest with some professional experience and ask her the age-old question . . . Is it nature or nurture?

They discuss how genetics play a role in how our children develop, but also there is a hope for nurture. We can’t control everything but we can control ourselves and how we parent.

They quickly learned that there is no blueprint. Each child needs an individualized parenting style because you can’t parent each child the same. And at the end of it all, it’s not nature or nurture, it’s both.

There is hope that as a parent, we can’t do it all and are not responsible for it all; however, we have to control what we can control and leave what we can’t.

Big Idea: Parenting is hard. You do the best you can with what you know. We have to go through our own growth and healing to parent well.

  • Parenting Selfishness
    Aug 23 2023

Co-hosts, Chris and Shante, have a #conversation about #selfishness. You’d think that this is a complaint session about how selfish the #kids can be, but what they have found is that parenting really exposes their own selfishness.

They recount stories from over the years and admit they’ve had #expectations of how their children should have responded to #gifts, #experiences, and overall great #parenting. When those responses were not received, it would result in a teaching (#soapbox) session with their kids about #gratitude. Not that these lessons were bad, but the real trigger, as Chris and Shante admit, was they didn’t feel seen or #appreciated which could also be a result of their personal #self-centeredness.

They admit we all #struggle with #selfishness and must be willing to identify and discuss it if we hope to help our children #overcome it earlier in life. A lot of times it is just a method to protect and preserve self not necessarily to harm others. To move from this, you will want to uncover why you feel the need to protect yourself.

The biggest takeaway is being a parent magnifies your weakness, especially selfishness. Don’t hide it. Talk about it and heal it.

This episode sparked a resource entitled “My Slef-ish Journal, Keep Out” that Shante wrote for you. It’s a selfish inventory with journal prompts. Request a free download on IG
