In this podcast, three longtime friends revisit the movies they grew up with to determine whether they’re still classics or just relics of their time. With a mix of humor, deep dives, and pop culture insights, Seth, Justin, and Brian break down what still works, what doesn’t, and whether nostalgia is clouding our judgment.

Stephen King, Killer Trucks & Questionable Decisions

What happens when Stephen King gets behind the camera, every machine on Earth decides to murder humanity, and AC/DC provides the soundtrack?

    Apparently... Maximum Overdrive.

This week on The Regular Guy Movie Show, Seth, Justin, and Brian revisit the 1986 horror/action disaster that marked Stephen King's one and only turn as a feature film director. Emilio Estevez leads a ragtag collection of truck-stop survivors against an army of homicidal machines, including a particularly pissed-off semi sporting the face of Marvel's Green Goblin.

And somehow, that's only the beginning of the insanity.

We're talking about King's questionable directorial decisions, the movie's spectacularly bad reviews, its equally ugly box-office performance, and why AC/DC might be the most talented thing involved in the entire production.

    Plus, we've got:

    • Fun with Numbies: The budget, box office, reviews, and the financial wreckage left behind.
    • Stephen King Behind the Camera: Cocaine, creative control, the 180-degree rule, and what happens when a bestselling author decides he can do Hollywood's job better.
    • I Don't Wanna Wait... for This Scare to Be Over!: We take innocent Dawson's Creek storylines and give them the Stephen King treatment.
    • Pick Your Poison: Killer machines, murderous vehicles, Stephen King adaptations, and other cinematic disasters.
    • The Boddicker Award: Who deserves recognition for bringing the most to this movie?

And finally, we tackle the question that really matters:

Is Maximum Overdrive so bad it's good... or just so fucking bad?

Our verdict might depend on how many beers we've had.

Grab a cold one, unplug your appliances, and whatever you do, don't trust the vending machine.

Thanks for listening. Thanks for drinking along with us. And until next time... be kind, rewind.

  • Episode 33: A Nightmare on Elm Street
    Oct 2 2026

On this episode, The Regular Guy Movie Show is heading to Elm Street, where the coffee is strong, the parenting is questionable, and falling asleep can get you murdered by a horribly burned psychopath with knives for fingers.

We're revisiting Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street and asking the important questions: Does it still hold up? How the hell did nobody in this neighborhood tell their kids about the child murderer their parents burned alive? And seriously...what the fuck was Freddy doing for the last 15 years?

Along the way, we dig into the movie's shoestring production, the practical effects that still look incredible, the rotating room that nearly became an electrical death trap, Johnny Depp's spectacular introduction to movie death, Robert Englund's transformation into a horror icon, and why Freddy Krueger was so different from the slashers who came before him.

    Plus:

    • We create our own Freddy-fueled nightmare with Nightmare on Mad Lib Street
    • Freddy faces some serious competition in Pick Your Poison
    • We hand out our Boddicker Award
    • And decide how many beers A Nightmare on Elm Street deserves

The writing isn't always great. The acting sure as hell isn't always great. But more than 40 years later, the creativity, practical effects and sheer ambition of this movie still deliver.

So grab a beer, brew a pot of coffee, and whatever you do...

    Don't. Fall. Asleep.

  • Episode 32: Clerks
    Sep 25 2026

We weren’t even supposed to be here today!

This time on The Regular Guy Movie Show, we’re heading to Leonardo, New Jersey, for Kevin Smith’s 1994 indie cult classic, Clerks.

Made for roughly $27,000 and filmed mostly overnight inside the convenience store where Smith actually worked, Clerks became a calling card for an entire generation of aspiring filmmakers. But more than 30 years later, does Dante and Randal’s day behind the counter still hold up?

We dig into the incredible story of how the movie was made, the mixture of actual actors and Kevin Smith’s buddies who populated the Quick Stop, the soundtrack that eventually cost far more than the movie itself, and the logistical gymnastics required to shoot a movie inside a functioning convenience store.

And because apparently we have entirely too much time on our hands, we also investigate some of Clerks’ surprisingly shaky timeline, Veronica’s questionable college-transfer decisions, rooftop hockey, the physics of postmortem erections, and why Kevin Smith probably should have stopped telling us exactly what fucking time it was.

    Plus:

Pick Your Poison puts Clerks against some of its 1994 contemporaries, fellow Gen-X slacker movies and other Kevin Smith favorites.

One Star, We’re Open! challenges Justin and Brian to identify famous businesses using nothing but hilariously terrible customer reviews.

We wave the Magic Wand and decide what one thing we’d change about Clerks.

We hand out the Boddicker Award for the movie’s best character.

And finally, Seth confronts an uncomfortable truth: sometimes nostalgia protects the movies we loved when we were younger... until you watch them again and discover that maybe younger you was kind of a fucking dumbass.

Grab a drink, put some gum in the shutter locks and join us for Clerks.

Just remember: this job would be great if it wasn’t for the fucking customers.
