In 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, a group of teenagers discover that falling asleep means getting murdered by a burned-up child killer with a glove full of knives and a serious grudge against bedtime. Nancy Thompson must figure out how to defeat Freddy Krueger before her friends become permanent residents of the afterlife, because apparently calling the police about a man who kills you in your dreams is a little complicated. It’s a terrifying reminder that growing up is hard enough without your parents’ questionable life choices coming back to haunt you in your sleep.

We assign 1997 Grosse Point Blank

Colonel Guile heads to the fictional nation of Shadaloo to rescue hostages from M. Bison, a dictator who has somehow decided that world domination requires a giant underground fortress and an impressive collection of shirtless men. Ryu and Ken are busy pretending to be criminals, Chun-Li is plotting revenge, and Dhalsim is somehow conducting science experiments while everyone else seems to be having the weirdest vacation imaginable. Eventually, everybody ends up in the same place, people start punching each other, and M. Bison discovers that being the world’s most powerful dictator still doesn’t protect you from Jean-Claude Van Damme doing a flying kick through your front door.

Kevin Flynn is digitized into a computer and discovers that the inside of a computer is apparently just a bunch of dudes in glowing pajamas trying to kill each other. Forced into gladiatorial games by a fascist operating system, Flynn teams up with Tron, a program who takes his job of protecting the system considerably more seriously than anyone should. It’s basically an 80s arcade game, a corporate espionage thriller, and a giant neon fever dream crammed into one movie and somehow convinced Disney to pay for it.

After his brother is crippled by Muay Thai fighter Tong Po, Kurt is looking for revenge, despite having apparently never heard of the concept of “leaving well enough alone.” He trains with Master Xian, learns to kick things really hard, and eventually faces Tong Po in a fight involving ropes, glass, and several decisions I would personally describe as “bad.” Somehow Kurt wins, proving that with enough rage and absolutely no regard for his own safety, he can punch you in your entire stomach.

The summer of sequels continues with The NeverEnding Story 2 from 1991

Bastian gets sucked back into Fantasia, because apparently one traumatizing adventure wasn’t enough. This time he has to stop the Nothing......er....emmmm.............Stop the Emptiness from destroying everything again, while learning the important lesson that unlimited wishes are probably a terrible idea when you’re an emotionally unstable kid with no adult supervision. It’s a perfectly serviceable sequel that takes the magic and wonder of the original and replaces much of it with the unmistakable feeling that someone in a Hollywood office said, “The first one made money, right?”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III proves that after saving New York twice, the next logical career move was accidental time travel to feudal Japan. Armed with swords, pizza cravings, and a magical scepter that runs on pure plot convenience. It's a movie that earnestly asks you to believe four talking turtles fit into 16th-century Japan better than they ever fit into 1990s New York.

Species II (1998) Ponders: "What if the first movie wasn't weird enough?" After a trip to Mars, an astronaut returns to Earth with an irresistible urge to spread alien DNA the fastest—and grossest—way imaginable, while scientists and hired guns scramble to stop him before humanity becomes one giant biology experiment. It's ninety minutes of bad decisions, exploding bodies, and a level of horniness that should've been quarantined with the rest of the mission.
