  • Nuclear Power: The Stepping Stone to a Renewable Future
    Aug 9 2021

In our fight to save our planet, we need to use every weapon in our arsenal, but we aren’t, countries around the world are ditching low carbon energy production in favour of burning fossil fuels.

That low carbon method is nuclear power, and while it has had a chequered history, it simply doesn’t deserve the bad reputation it’s developed over the years.

Vaccines have saved millions of lives. Through there continued use humanity has rid itself of some truly horrifying diseases and is well on its way to banishing more.

  • Architectural Mishaps
    Jul 12 2021

You tend to assume that when a new building goes up, the architects, and the construction teams have ensured that it’s safe.

You hope they’ve made sure it won’t topple over, collapse, shake, or pose a fire risk…. Yet that’s not always the case.

Sometimes that’s down to cost cutting measures, other times it’s incompetence, and occasionally it’s plain old human error.

We’re going to take a journey through a few architectural mishaps, examine what went wrong, and how they fixed the problems.

  • The Greatest Espionage Haul of the Cold War – The K129 – Part 2
    Jun 14 2021

We left the story with the Hughes Glomar Explorer leaving its west coast staging grounds in search of the wreckage of a Soviet ballistic missile submarine. Its goal was to recover the sub from below three miles of ocean and return it to the surface to learn about the nuclear weapons she carried, and the navy that she belonged to.

  • Are We Really Alone in the Universe?
    May 17 2021

There are up to 400 billion stars in our galaxy, and as many as two trillion galaxies in the universe. Just within our galaxy alone there are potentially 6 billion Earth-like planets, and in the universe as a whole, as many as 12 quintillion. That’s a 12 with 30 zeros after it.

With all of those potential places for life to spring from, the odds of planet earth being the only one that has produced life seem vanishingly small.

And yet, as far as we can tell, we are indeed alone in the universe.

This is the basis for the Fermi paradox.

  • The Devil’s Drink: How the Pope Saved Coffee
    May 3 2021

Coffee has become one of the world’s most popular beverages, we consume nearly ten million tons of the stuff a year.

Coffee’s meteoric rise in popularity was not always assured. From its African origins, spread through the Arabic world, and proliferation through Europe and beyond, it has faced controversy and condemnation at every step.

The same story played out time and time again – scepticism and mistrust, taxation and prohibition, which eventually gave way to acceptance and widespread use.
