About MAZE:

https://www.maze.nu/

Amsterdam-based ensemble MAZE is dedicated to performing music that challenges the idea of fixed form and fixed listening perspectives. They work with pioneering composers to develop open scores, hybrid notations and unusual performances.

MAZE is formed by Yannis Kyriakides, Anne La Berge, Gareth Davis, Reinier van Houdt, Wiek Hijmans and Dario Calderone. Each member brings a distinct artistic practice to the ensemble, contributing to a collective approach in which roles, materials and modes of attention remain fluid and open to transformation.

They produce local festivals in addition to concerts, lectures, and discussion panels on the future of notation, composition and performance. The exploration of new media for the creation of notation and scores, has been the focus of MAZE in the last years, as seen in the work of members Anne La Berge and Yannis Kyriakides.

MAZE has collaborated with guest composers such as Christian Marclay, Annea Lockwood, Michael Pisaro, Okkyung Lee, Peter Ablinger, Barbara Ellison, Alessandro Bosetti and Alvin Lucier. In recent years, MAZE has presented its work at venues and festivals including Holland Festival, Bimhuis, the Onassis Foundation in Athens, Angelica Festival in Bologna, Riverrun in Albi, Kontraklang in Berlin, and Arnolfini in Bristol, among others.

Yannis Kyriakides (with Anne La Berge & Wiek Hijmans)

Composer and sound artist Yannis Kyriakides born in Limassol, Cyprus, grew up in England, and has been based in Amsterdam since 1992, where he studied composition with Louis Andriessen and Dick Raaijmakers after graduating in musicology at York. He also holds a PhD from Leiden University for his artistic research entitled Imagined Voices.

As a composer and sound artist, Kyriakides is drawn to the possibilities of creating new hybrids and intersections between media. His artistic practice is not confined to a single tradition or form but instead searches for ways to generate fresh experiences of listening. Central to his work is the exploration of the relationship between music, words and images. In both his concert compositions and installation pieces, he has repeatedly investigated how language can merge with sound: encoding text into sonic systems, synthesizing voices, or projecting text to shape the perception of music. These experiments extend beyond mere accompaniment, opening up new ways of experiencing meaning in sound. In recent years, his curiosity has turned toward interactive and generative scores, where performers and audiences alike engage with music as a live process that evolves in real time.

  • Anne La Berge: Pause Then
    Oct 10 2026

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Anne La Berge (with Yannis Kyriakides & Dario Calderone)

Anne La Berge , a composer, improviser, and flutist who has spent her career pushing at the edges of both written and improvised music, drawing as much from storytelling and sound art as from traditional composition. Her work is rooted in the social and political currents she lives within, music that moves between the poetic and the political. Many of her pieces are built as open, multi-level structures, where performers follow flexible cues and shape the music together in the moment, often via phones, tablets, or laptops that give them genuine real-time agency. She is part of MAZE, as flutist and composer and for the upcoming festival she has created a new work called Pause Then that will find its MAZE premiere on 25 October.
