S2 Ep7: Twilight with The Cinemile
    Oct 3 2023
Much like a vampire who has fallen wildly in love with you at first sniff, Twilight was simply inescapable. Like a teenage werewolf, it morphed rapidly, from 50 Shades fan fic to a best selling book to a film tie in, coinciding with the full moon of TMZ gossip culture rising across the horizon, making its young cast some of the most watched people on the planet. That’s enough metaphors stretched to breaking point, we are joined by our friends at The Cinemile to unpick not just a film but a cultural juggernaut, both full of frankly disturbing behaviour.

Danny Boyle, Ewan McGregor, Cameron Diaz, a banging soundtrack, an iconic poster and an absurdly stacked supporting cast. What could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a lot actually.
Join us as we hit peak 90s with author and editor Philip Ellis and attempt to answer the question - why does no one ever talk about surreal crime rom com (rom com crim?) A Life Less Ordinary

Even if, like Deb, you're not on the guest list for rock'n'roll heaven, we'll never turn you away at The Last One To See! This week we welcome Graham Smyth, the last one to see EMPIRE RECORDS.

Say no more (Mon Amour) and have a listen as we discuss experiences of retail work, our single/album/vinyl buying firsts, and this mad grab bag of a 90s movie.

  • S2 Ep3: The Matrix with Kate Dolan

S2 Ep3: The Matrix with Kate Dolan
    Mar 14 2023
This week we finally release our long promised episode with Irish writer/director extraordinaire Kate Dolan where she is the last one to see The Matrix.

Given the technology theme of the movie, I had ChatGPT generate an episode blurb. I’m willing to bet with a strong degree of confidence that we’re not in a simulation if this is the best that AI can deliver on the prompt “write a 200 word blurb, full of puns, about the movie The Matrix for a podcast episode where we watch it with a guest who has never seen it”:

Are you ready to enter the Matrix? On this week's episode of our podcast, we're joined by a special guest who has never seen this iconic sci-fi film before. So grab your shades, strap in, and get ready to take the red pill with us!

The Matrix is a movie that'll have you questioning everything you thought you knew about reality. It's full of mind-bending special effects that'll have you dodging bullets and jumping over buildings like a superhero. And with some of the most quotable lines in movie history, it's bound to be a wild ride!

But don't worry if you're a bit green when it comes to The Matrix – we'll guide you through the ins and outs of this classic film. We'll explore the philosophical themes that underpin the story, from the nature of existence to the limits of free will.

So if you're ready to plug into the Matrix and take on the machines, join us for this week's episode of our podcast! It's going to be an action-packed journey through a world where anything is possible, and where nothing is as it seems.

Not only is this episode coming to you months later than originally scheduled - our previously promised season one closing episode - it was further delayed by a busy run-up to Oscars weekend (and the ensuing jet-lag-like feeling David is experiencing staying up to watch it). The pre- and post-watch recordings with Kate Dolan were recorded around this time last year and our episode intro and outro last week.

  • S2 Ep2: The Lion King with Gavan Casey

S2 Ep2: The Lion King with Gavan Casey
    Feb 24 2023
Between talking about imagination-led childhoods full of dinosaurs (and rewatching what you had access to), entering a franchise through its spin-off properties, wanting to lead a #JusticeForSarabi campaign, calling out Mustafa for his Jeff-Bezos-like billionaire complex, disputing the originality of our story in question (nods to both Hamlet and Kimba The White Lion) and Disney villain gaze gays, this episode leaves no stone left unturned on Pride Rock.

And you will definitely not want to miss the big surprise that comes in the outro. This one's a very special episode...

  • S2 Ep1: Titanic with Richy Craven & Rachel O'Neill

    S2 Ep1: Titanic with Richy Craven & Rachel O'Neill
    Feb 10 2023
It’s been 84 years… Well not quite. The ship of dreams is taking to the high seas once again as Titanic sails into cinemas for her 25th anniversary. What better time to climb aboard this cultural juggernaut and see if it remains a first class experience. We wanted to go to a real party so not one but two guests embarked on this transatlantic crossing with us. A mathematical certainty of a good time.

Speaking of potential disastrous endeavours taking their maiden voyage, we have launched a Patreon! The First One To See is the home of all our cultural chats including what we’re watching right now and anything else that tickles our fancy. Sign up at https://www.patreon.com/TheLastOneToSee
