What If the Life You're Building Is Costing You Your Life?

What if the life you're working so hard to create is making it harder to actually live and enjoy it?

In this solo episode of The Health Bridge Podcast, I explore why women often put themselves last without even realizing it. And it doesn't always look like caring for everyone else. Sometimes, it looks like building a business you love, pursuing a meaningful purpose, staying on top of an endless to-do list, or constantly telling yourself you'll rest when everything else is finished.

If you're a woman navigating autoimmune disease, chronic illness, or persistent fatigue, you may already know what it's like to have less energy than your responsibilities demand. But what happens when you keep trying to function as though your energy is unlimited?

We often celebrate being productive, dependable, and strong. Yet sometimes these patterns can become ways of feeling valuable, staying needed, or avoiding difficult emotions. Understanding the possible purpose behind these patterns can help us approach ourselves with greater curiosity and compassion.

In this conversation, I'm inviting you to explore your relationship with yourself and ask whether the ways you've learned to function are still serving you today.

We'll look at the hidden cost of self-neglect, why respecting your limits is an act of stewardship rather than failure, and how small actions can help you rebuild self-trust.

Because your passion matters. Your family matters. Your work matters. And you matter inside all of it.

You don't have to put yourself first every time. But you do need to stop leaving yourself out.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE
    • The less obvious ways women put themselves last.

    • Why passion and ambition aren't the problem, but self-abandonment can become part of the process.

    • How the promise of resting later can keep you postponing your own needs.

    • Why patterns of busyness and productivity may have developed as adaptations to earlier life circumstances.

    • How constant activity can sometimes help us avoid uncomfortable emotions.

    • Why scattered attention and endless task lists can drain limited energy.

    • How to think about your energy as a finite resource.

    • What self-abandonment can sound like in everyday life.

    • Why self-trust grows when you listen to yourself and respond to what you need.

    • Four questions to help you recognize what you're building and whether you're sacrificing yourself along the way.

    • How one small, intentional action can help you begin including yourself in the life you're creating.

If you're living with autoimmune disease, chronic inflammation, or breast cancer, it can feel like you're supposed to change everything at once.

In this episode of The Health Bridge Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Carol Lourie to explore the connection between autoimmune disease, inflammation, breast cancer, emotional health, nutrition, environmental factors, movement, sleep, and the way we approach our own healing.

Dr. Carol Lourie is a naturopath, Chinese medicine practitioner, licensed acupuncturist, and homeopath with more than four decades of clinical experience. She has spent more than 20 years specializing in integrative breast cancer care.

We talk about what may connect autoimmune disease and breast cancer, the role of inflammation, how emotional patterns can affect the way we experience illness, and what women can actually begin to control.

We also talk about something I think is especially important for women living with chronic illness:

You don't have to change everything at once. Start with one thing.

Because when the list of things you're "supposed" to do becomes overwhelming, it's easy to do nothing at all.

The goal isn't perfection. It's taking the next step.

    In This Episode

    • Autoimmune disease, inflammation and breast cancer
    • Emotional health, trauma and self-worth
    • People-pleasing and putting yourself last
    • Nutrition and inflammatory foods
    • The importance of community during a healing journey
    • Environmental factors and creating a healthier home
    • Movement and building consistency gradually
    • Sleep, stress and your nighttime environment
    • Why doing everything at once can backfire
    • Moving from hopelessness toward possibility
    • The power of taking one small step

  • Stop Fighting Your Body: A Different Way to Think About Autoimmunity
    Sep 30 2026
💛 FREE DAILY THRIVE GUIDE + WELLNESS TRACKER Want to start noticing the patterns between your daily habits, stress, symptoms, and the way your body feels? Download my free Daily Thrive Guide & Wellness Tracker here: https://subscribepage.io/dailyguide Stop Fighting Your Body: A Different Way to Think About Autoimmunity What if your body isn't actually the enemy? If you live with an autoimmune condition, you've probably been told that your immune system is "attacking" your own body. But what if we looked at that relationship differently? In this episode of The Health Bridge Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Henry Ealy, founder of the Energetic Health Institute, for a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation about autoimmunity, cellular health, heavy metals, energy production, self-talk, self-love, and the mind-body connection. Dr. Ealy shares his perspective on why he believes the immune system may be responding to changes in the body's cellular environment rather than simply making a mistake. We explore his views on heavy metals and infections as possible contributors to autoimmune conditions, as well as his emphasis on energy production and mitochondrial support. But as our conversation unfolds, we move into a subject that feels deeply relevant to the women I work with: the way we talk to ourselves. What happens when you've spent years putting everyone else first? When you're constantly taking responsibility for everyone around you? When fear, doubt, and self-criticism become part of your everyday internal dialogue? Dr. Ealy challenges us to think beyond self-advocacy and consider what it would look like to become a true friend to ourselves. We talk about meditation, self-love, learning to recognize the good things we do every day, and a simple "mental high five" exercise that you can start practicing immediately. For me, this conversation comes back to something I talk about often here on The Health Bridge Podcast: healing begins when we stop fighting our body and partner with it instead. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Dr. Ealy's perspective on the immune system and autoimmune conditions His theory about cellular "self" and "not-self" identification His views on heavy metals and infections as possible contributors to autoimmune symptoms Why he emphasizes energy production and mitochondrial support The importance of examining the internal conversation you have with yourself Why women may be especially prone to putting everyone else's needs ahead of their own The difference between self-advocacy and self-friendship How meditation can help create awareness around your thoughts The "mental high five" practice How to create a self-compliment that feels authentic Why self-love doesn't have to mean narcissism or ego The deeper idea that you don't have to earn your worth or your right to receive love ABOUT DR. HENRY EALY Dr. Henry Ealy is the founder of the Energetic Health Institute, where he teaches what he describes as the Life-Healing Arts & Sciences. He describes himself as a healer, author, and teacher and as a champion of Love, Logic, Light, and Freedom. In this conversation, Dr. Ealy brings his perspective on holistic healing, autoimmunity, energy production, self-love, meditation, and the relationship between our physical and emotional experiences. • What If Your Autoimmune Symptoms Aren't All From Your Autoimmune Disease? | Dr. Sal
    Sep 16 2026
WHAT IF YOUR AUTOIMMUNE SYMPTOMS AREN'T ALL FROM YOUR AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE? Could gut health and the microbiome be contributing to your autoimmune symptoms, chronic inflammation, fatigue, brain fog, or digestive problems? In this episode of The Health Bridge Podcast, Holly B. explores the connection between gut health, the gut microbiome, dysbiosis, inflammation, autoimmune disease, and the gut-brain connection with Dr. Sulaiman Bharwani (Dr. Sal), a board-certified gastroenterologist and nutritionist, microbiome expert, and founder of GutRewired. If you have an autoimmune condition and continue to experience chronic symptoms—even when your disease appears to be under control—this conversation will help you understand why looking at the gut may be an important piece of the bigger picture. Together, Holly and Dr. Sal explore what we currently understand about the microbiome and autoimmune disease, how gut dysfunction may influence inflammation and immune function, and how the gut and brain continuously communicate with one another. This isn't about claiming that gut health can "cure" autoimmune disease. It's about becoming more curious about your symptoms, understanding the multiple factors that influence your health, and learning to see your microbiome as an ally rather than something that simply needs to be "fixed." With more than 30 years of experience in research, education, and clinical care, Dr. Sal brings a unique perspective to this conversation—translating complex science about the gut, brain, microbiome, and nutrition into practical strategies people can use in everyday life. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE • Why dysbiosis may play a significant role in autoimmune disease • How the microbiome helps train and regulate the immune system • The relationship between gut health, inflammation, and the gut barrier • Why autoimmune symptoms may not always tell the whole story • How to investigate whether gut issues may be contributing to your symptoms • What microbiome testing can—and cannot—currently tell us • Why plant diversity matters for a healthy microbiome • The role of fermented foods, probiotics, and prebiotics • How the gut communicates with the brain • How stress can influence gut symptoms and the gut-brain connection • The potential role of gut-directed hypnotherapy • Why Dr. Sal believes your microbiome should be viewed as an ally • How foundational habits like sleep, hydration, nutrition, breathing, and movement support gut health ABOUT DR. SAL Dr. Sulaiman Bharwani (Dr. Sal) is a board-certified gastroenterologist and nutritionist with more than 30 years of experience in research, education, and clinical care. He is the founder of GutRewired and has nearly 100 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. His work focuses on translating complex science around the gut, brain, microbiome, and nutrition into practical strategies people can use in everyday life. Dr. Sal is also a sought-after educator and speaker who has taught and presented at universities and medical conferences around the world. • What If Your Autoimmune Disease Isn't the Root Cause? | with Dr. Sam Shay DC, FMCP
    Sep 2 2026

What If Your Autoimmune Disease Isn't the Root Cause? | Dr. Sam Shay

What if your autoimmune diagnosis is only part of the story?

In this episode, Dr. Sam Shay and I explore what may be happening beneath an autoimmune diagnosis and why understanding your body's unique "root process" may be more useful than simply managing symptoms.

Dr. Sam explains how genetics, gut health, lifestyle, stress, sleep, environmental factors, and metabolic health can all contribute to immune dysregulation. We also discuss functional testing, genetic testing, and why "normal" lab results don't always tell the whole story.

But perhaps the most important part of this conversation is what happens when we stop viewing the body as broken and start recognizing symptoms as communication.

Dr. Sam shares his own experience discovering that his genetics helped explain some of the patterns he was experiencing—and the powerful realization that led him to say, "I forgave my body."

Because healing isn't about fighting your body into submission. It's about learning to listen, understand, and partner with it.

    What You'll Learn
    • Why an autoimmune diagnosis may not explain the whole picture

    • Dr. Sam's "root process" model of autoimmunity

    • How genetics can provide clues about your individual health patterns

    • The major categories of functional testing

    • Why "normal" labs don't always mean optimal health

    • How genetics, gut health, lifestyle, and environment interact

    • Where Dr. Sam recommends starting with testing

    • Why your genes aren't your destiny

    • How changing your relationship with your body can change your healing journey

    • Why your body may not be broken—it may be communicating

  • Is It an Autoimmune Flare… or Perimenopause?
    Aug 26 2026

Have your symptoms suddenly changed—and immediately wondered if your autoimmune disease is getting worse?

For women living with autoimmune disease, perimenopause and menopause can create a confusing overlap. Fatigue, joint pain, poor sleep, brain fog, digestive changes, headaches, and weight changes can all leave you wondering: Is this an autoimmune flare, changing hormones, or something else?

In this episode, Holly sits down with Functional Medicine Nutritionist Cindy Dupuie to explore the connection between hormones, digestion, inflammation, and autoimmunity.

They discuss why symptoms can become harder to interpret during perimenopause, how hormonal changes can affect digestion and inflammation, the challenges of hormone testing, HRT, self-advocacy, and the importance of looking at the bigger picture when your body starts changing.

Most importantly, this conversation explores how to pay attention to your body without automatically interpreting every new symptom through the lens of fear.

Because a changing body isn't necessarily a failing body. Sometimes, it's asking you to listen in a new way.

    In this episode, you'll learn:
    • Why perimenopause and autoimmune symptoms can be difficult to distinguish

    • How changing hormones can affect digestion and inflammation

    • Why you may feel different even when your autoimmune markers remain stable

    • How to investigate new symptoms and advocate for yourself

    • Why hormone care isn't one-size-fits-all

    • Where HRT and holistic approaches can work together

    • How to pay attention to your body without becoming hypervigilant

  • What If Your Illness Is Part of Your Healing? | with Blaise Kennedy
    Aug 19 2026

What if your body isn't working against you... but communicating something you haven't yet learned how to hear?

When you live with lupus or another autoimmune condition, it's easy to approach your body as a problem to fix. Find the right supplement. Follow the right protocol. Eliminate the symptom. But what if healing requires something deeper than fixing?

In this episode, I'm joined by Blaise Kennedy, a teacher of embodied, relational spirituality whose work explores nervous system healing, trauma, intuition, connection, consciousness, and what it means to become more fully embodied.

We explore what happens when we stop fighting the body and begin listening to it, why being truly heard and received can help the nervous system relax, and how we can rebuild trust in our own intuition.

Blaise and I also talk about the connection between trauma and the body, the importance of community and co-regulation, why illness shouldn't automatically be viewed as a personal failure, and his provocative perspective that illness may sometimes be part of a larger process of healing and transformation.

If you've ever felt like your body is betraying you, this conversation may invite you to see your healing journey through a completely different lens.

    In This Episode:
    • Why we instinctively approach illness as a problem to fix

    • Moving from fighting your body to listening to it

    • How being heard and received can help the nervous system relax

    • Rebuilding trust in your intuition

    • Trauma, stored emotion, and disconnection in the body

    • The body's innate intelligence

    • The role of community, connection, and co-regulation

    • Why "it's my responsibility, but it's not my fault" is such a powerful distinction

    • Why illness may be part of a larger healing process

    • Creating the conditions for healing rather than simply suppressing symptoms
