  • The Founder Journey: From Grads to Multi-Practice Owners with Dr Carl Pan & Dr Berwyn Liu
    Jul 3 2026

It’s no secret that the first few years out of dental school rarely match what we imagined back in uni. In this episode, I sit down with Dr Carl and Dr Berwyn, two practice owners who now run six clinics together, to talk honestly about the messy, humbling path that got them there.

We begin with how a chance meeting at an ADSA convention turned into a friendship that was tested and strengthened through one of the toughest clinics either of them had worked in, and how surviving that “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere” environment ultimately laid the foundations for the business they would build together years later.

From there, we follow their careers in parallel. Carl shares the story of being fired from his first job and how an unexpected rural placement changed the course of his career, while Berwyn reflects on his years in the public system, the transition into private practice, and the communication skills he realised he still needed to develop.

What I loved most about this conversation was how honest they were about what actually moved the needle. Not another clinical course, but learning how to communicate. Building trust. Measuring what mattered. Taking photos consistently. Treating every patient like they were the only patient of the day. Small habits that, over time, completely changed the trajectory of their careers.

Whether you’re a student, new graduate, or experienced clinician, this conversation is full of practical lessons on communication, career development, and becoming the kind of dentist patients choose to come back to.

    O P E N U P

a communication course for the contemporary dentist
We don't get to do the dentistry we want to by learning more dentistry. We get to do it by helping our patients understand why it matters, and by overcoming all the little barriers we put in our own way that stop us from properly showing up.

Learn how to build genuine connection and trust with your patients, and lead them with clarity and conviction.

  • To The Grad with Empty Books & Rising Anxiety with Dr Mass Nasir
    May 11 2026
With all the uncertainty in the world at the moment and books being quieter than ever before, it’s no surprise that anxiety amongst new grads is on the rise. What began as a reflective DPR post titled “To the Grad with Empty Books and Rising Anxiety” became a much bigger conversation with Dr Mass Nasir about the realities of life as a new grad dentist - the pressure, impostor syndrome, social media comparison, and the constant feeling of falling behind. But more importantly, this episode explores what actually makes a good dentist beyond clinical skill alone. From communication and emotional intelligence to confidence, authenticity, and mentorship, we dive deep into the soft skills that no one explicitly teaches us, yet ultimately shape our careers the most.Mass shares insights from mentoring new grads within his own practices, including the mindset shifts he believes are essential early on, why communication matters more than scripts, and how building trust with patients is often the key to building confidence in yourself. We also discuss philosophy, social media dentistry, the dangers of comparison, and the importance of finding balance and perspective within a profession that can so easily consume us.I think we’re all guilty of having these thoughts at times, but this episode felt like such a beautifully honest and grounding reminder that we are only human, that it is normal to feel this way, and that we need to give ourselves the grace to grow.____________________________________F O L L O W@thegraduatedentistHost: @dr.ericahwinGuest: @dr.mass.nasir____________________________________D I S C O R DJoin The Graduate Dentist Community Discord ServerThis is a forum dedicated to our graduate community for us to debrief episodes, discuss daily dental scenarios and bounce ideas off one another. • Finding Fulfilment Beyond Clinical Dentistry with Dr Cathleen Dong
    Apr 24 2026
Recently, I was asked by a new grad how I find fulfilment in what I do, and how to explore avenues beyond just clinical dentistry. Because in uni, we’re surrounded by so many opportunities to get involved, but once we graduate, it’s easy to fall into the rhythm of working in our 3×3 room - clocking in, clocking out, rinse and repeat - and wondering, “Is this it?”So for this episode, it felt only right to bring on someone I’ve always admired for never limiting herself to just clinical dentistry, and for truly demonstrating the breadth of non-linear opportunities available to us. Enter, Dr Cathleen Dong. From podcasting and content creation to building websites, working as a loupes rep, being a clinical tutor, founding her own scrubs company, and now serving as Vice President of the ADA NSW, Cathleen is an incredible example of what’s possible when you stay curious and open.In this conversation, we reflect on what each of these pursuits has taught her and how those lessons have translated back into her clinical practice. We also talk about the realities of feeling isolated after graduation, her experience navigating a back injury that took her out of clinical work for four months and the perspective it gave her, as well as her time working across both public and private systems. We explore what leadership really means, and how we can all get involved to be the change we want to see in our industry. This episode is a reminder that dentistry doesn’t have to be restrictive - it can be expansive, creative, and deeply fulfilling. So be open to trying, to playing, to putting your hand up and giving things a go! You never know what you might learn and where it will take you.____________________________________F O L L O W@thegraduatedentistHost: @dr.ericahwinGuest: @drcathleendong____________________________________D I S C O R DJoin The Graduate Dentist Community Discord ServerThis is a forum dedicated to our graduate community for us to debrief episodes, discuss daily dental scenarios and bounce ideas off one another.
