With all the uncertainty in the world at the moment and books being quieter than ever before, it’s no surprise that anxiety amongst new grads is on the rise. What began as a reflective DPR post titled “To the Grad with Empty Books and Rising Anxiety” became a much bigger conversation with Dr Mass Nasir about the realities of life as a new grad dentist - the pressure, impostor syndrome, social media comparison, and the constant feeling of falling behind. But more importantly, this episode explores what actually makes a good dentist beyond clinical skill alone. From communication and emotional intelligence to confidence, authenticity, and mentorship, we dive deep into the soft skills that no one explicitly teaches us, yet ultimately shape our careers the most.Mass shares insights from mentoring new grads within his own practices, including the mindset shifts he believes are essential early on, why communication matters more than scripts, and how building trust with patients is often the key to building confidence in yourself. We also discuss philosophy, social media dentistry, the dangers of comparison, and the importance of finding balance and perspective within a profession that can so easily consume us.I think we’re all guilty of having these thoughts at times, but this episode felt like such a beautifully honest and grounding reminder that we are only human, that it is normal to feel this way, and that we need to give ourselves the grace to grow.____________________________________F O L L O W@thegraduatedentistHost: @dr.ericahwinGuest: @dr.mass.nasir____________________________________D I S C O R DJoin The Graduate Dentist Community Discord ServerThis is a forum dedicated to our graduate community for us to debrief episodes, discuss daily dental scenarios and bounce ideas off one another.
