Episode 253

What happens when you take a love for wine and pair it with a much bigger purpose? Tyler and Kelly Mullman were my neighbors in Tulsa, and today they own Cana Ranch Wines, a nonprofit winery built around meaningful work for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

A friend asked Tyler what he knew about running a nonprofit or making wine. Not much. So he enrolled in the UC Davis online winemaking program, and they volunteered at Belong Kitchen in Houston to learn how a nonprofit runs. We talk about the name, the first vintage (a 2024 Napa Valley Cabernet, 165 cases), how every $200 donation returns a bottle and funds their two partner programs, the Houston release party on November 13, and the vision of a Napa vineyard with a job for adults with disabilities at every level. Tyler's advice: you are smarter than you think you are. Keep trying, keep figuring it out.

Destiny Green is the executive director of the Williams Route 66 Marathon and the historic Tulsa Run, and her path there started in IT. Today she shares how she grew from the race founder's right hand into leading it all, and why this job lets her have a small part in helping people do things they never thought they could do. She has seen engagements at the finish line and has even married couples at the start line.

We talk about how truly anyone can take part: walk a mile, walk a 5K, volunteer (it takes about 1,200 volunteers to make race weekend happen), or just get up off the couch and call a girlfriend for a walk after dinner. And I loved hearing about Kicks for Kids, the program that coaches and mentors elementary kids in Title I schools, teaching nutrition, confidence, and life lessons, where every kid who shows up earns a race entry, a medal, and a brand-new pair of running shoes. Some of them have never had a new pair of shoes before. It started with 4 schools and is in 18 now.

Susan McMurray spent 30 years in a classroom pouring into other people. This past summer she made something of her own: Kindred & Bloom, a magazine-style devotional for women with contributor articles in the front and a five-week devotional in the back, built to be an excuse to gather.

We talk about the magazine she loved that stopped publishing, how the first issue's theme, Abide, came out of a class at her church, the women she asked to write for it, and Create and Connect, the fifth week where you put the reading down and make something with your hands.

Susan names the thing under all of it: she read that over half of Americans feel unseen. Then she asks about the empty closet. If there is an empty closet in the house, we fill it with crud, and our schedules work the same way. The fix is margin, on purpose. And she is honest about starting: it was scary to take on something that was just hers, she got up at one in the morning to work on it, and her best advice is one line. Do not despise small beginnings.

What does it take to protect what matters most? Sara Gadd leads the Human Trafficking Education and Response Program at Ascension St. John in Tulsa and chairs the Oklahoma Coalition Against Human Trafficking, and her message is a hopeful one: knowledge reduces vulnerability, relationships matter more than rules, and everything we do makes a difference.

We talk about how a kid who volunteered in Southern California grew into this work one step at a time, the three kinds of parents she sees and why the healthiest place is in the middle, staying close to your kids' world, and being the trusted adult a young person can come to even after a mistake. Awareness works better than fear, and a calm, informed adult changes the outcome.

Shelby Gardner is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, and mom of two spitfire daughters, and one of the most refreshingly honest guests I have had. A year ago she stepped away from a ministry position she loved because she felt God asking her to, expecting life to take off the very next week. It did not. Dr. Jessica Rimmer is the CEO of Solomon Strategic Advisors, an executive coach, a keynote speaker, and the author of The Purpose Formula: Learn to be Fully Alive. Olivia Jordan is the first and only woman from Oklahoma ever crowned Miss USA, and she has built an acting career across NCIS, Hawaii Five-0, Dollface and a run of Lifetime leads. She is also one of the most honest guests I have had about what pursuing a dream actually looks like. She set out 15 years ago wanting to be a series regular on a TV show. That has not happened yet. She is still going, and she can tell you exactly why.

We talk about how she checks in with herself when the outside voices get loud, why the growth she can measure year over year is the real reward, and what it takes to stop living on someone else's timeline. She tells the small world story of how she found her way into Cody Mayo Studios here in Tulsa, which started with one of my own articles in a dentist's waiting room. She talks about her medallion on the Circle Cinema Walk of Fame, the place she calls the heart of Oklahoma film. And she shares how she is raising her daughter Lola with room for big feelings, using meditation and affirmations they have practiced since Lola was an infant, plus a reminder every mom needs about giving herself grace.
