    Today we remember the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev Near Caves, a special day honoring the many monastic saints who lived and prayed in the caves of Saint Anthony. This celebration brings together the memory of numerous ascetics, monks, and martyrs whose relics were discovered during the restoration of the caves. The commemoration was originally held on the Saturday after the Leave-taking of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross but was moved to September 28 in 1886. Among these holy fathers are monks, bishops, martyrs, and wonderworkers, all remembered for their dedication to prayer and the monastic life in the Kiev caves.

Saint Sabbatius first lived at the Saint Cyril of White Lake monastery before moving to Valaam and finally to the uninhabited Solovki Island. There, with Saint Germanus, he established a monastic presence in harsh northern conditions, overcoming temptations and hardships through prayer and faith.
