Hij is misschien wel de meest succesvolle gamer die Nederland ooit heeft gekend, in ieder geval de beste Hearthstone-speler. Thijs Molendijk werd tweemaal Europees kampioen met het virtuele kaartspel en haalde in 2015 de halve finale van het WK.

Hij is nog steeds competitief Hearthstone-speler maar legt zich tegenwoordig meer toe op streaming en content creation. En dus heeft hij eindelijk tijd om plaats te nemen achter de microfoon van de podcast SEG Stories voor een goed gesprek met host Joost Hofman.

Thijs spreekt onder meer openhartig over zijn schooltijd, die niet altijd even prettig was voor hem. “Ik was introvert, werd gepest en ontwikkelde een eetstoornis. Van m'n tiende tot m'n zestiende was gewoon geen leuke tijd. Mijn plezier haalde ik uit gamen en ik werd steeds beter.”

In 2018 won hij tijdens een groot toernooi een Aston Martin, een prestigieuze Engelse sportbolide. “Een prachtige auto, maar ik dacht: wat moet ik ermee? Daarom koos ik voor een mooi geldbedrag.”

Een van de hoogtepunten uit zijn carrière was toen hij in 2015 Europees kampioen werd. “Opeens begonnen er in dat stadion 10.000 man te applaudisseren. Ik was nog steeds zo gefocust op de wedstrijd dat ik het niet doorhad. Toen dacht ik: wauw, dit is fantastisch.”

He may well be the most successful gamer the Netherlands has ever known, at least the best Hearthstone player. Thijs Molendijk became European champion twice with the virtual card game and reached the semi-finals of the World Championship in 2015.

He is still a competitive Hearthstone player, but nowadays he focuses more on streaming and content creation. And so, he finally had time to sit down behind the microphone of the podcast SEG Stories for an in-depth conversation with host Joost Hofman.

Thijs speaks candidly about his school years, which were not always easy for him. “I was introverted, got bullied and developed an eating disorder. From age ten to sixteen just wasn’t a fun time. I found joy in gaming and kept getting better.”

In 2018, he won an Aston Martin, a prestigious English sports car, at a major tournament. “A beautiful car, but I thought: what am I going to do with it? So I chose a nice sum of money instead.”

One of the highlights of his career was becoming European champion in 2015. “Suddenly, 10,000 people in that stadium started applauding. I was still so focused on the match that I didn’t even notice. Then I thought: wow, this is amazing.”
