  • Cleft of the Rock
    Oct 14 2026

On a weekend hike at Pere Marquette State Park, Dave stopped at a sixty-foot cliff where the only sign of life was a burst of green growing out of a single crack. He confesses up front that he spent years building a wall just like that rock face, out of six deployments and Jumpmaster dependability, and that being steady is not the same as being unbreakable. From there the episode moves through three passages: Exodus 33, where the rock and the cleft belong to God and not to Moses; John 10:10, where abundant life means life in the Shepherd's care rather than easy circumstances; and Psalm 61:2, where David asks to be led to "the rock that is higher than I." If you've been the dependable one for so long that you've forgotten how to say you're struggling, this conversation is an invitation to stop spending your strength on appearances and bring the crack to the One who already knows it's there. Resilience may look like getting back up, or it may look like finally asking for help.

  • The Multi-Stranded Life
    Sep 28 2026

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave reflects on returning to the sport of triathlons after a four-year hiatus and draws parallels between endurance racing, faith, and the multi-stranded strength of 550 cord. Through the distinct phases of a race—the swim, transitions, bike, and run—he explores how we navigate life's unseen paths, manage our physical and emotional loads, and rely on both God and community rather than trying to carry everything on a single strength.

  • Walking by Faith When You Don't Have the Full Picture | 9/11 Reflection
    Sep 11 2026

On September 11, 2001, Dave was deep in the Washington wilderness leading eight students when the radio suddenly crackled with a THREATCON DELTA alert—forcing him to project calm and maintain accountability without knowing the world had just changed. Looking back 25 years later, Dave explores how that morning in the woods revealed a core truth about leadership and faith: accountability must come before answers, and true resilience means taking the next right step even when you cannot see the full picture.

  • You Don't Have to be Healed to Lead
    Sep 7 2026

Before the students arrive, there’s a crossing that has to be made. In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave reflects on a familiar walk from the early years in his career—a trek from instructor camp to student camp that included crossing Tacoma Creek—and how that simple transition became a reminder to prepare his heart before stepping into the mission. Today, that same crossing represents something deeper: the recognition that we don’t have to be fully healed, perfectly prepared, or have everything figured out before God can work through us. Drawing from Mark 1:35 and his own journey of faith, Dave explores the difference between preparation and control, competence and dependence, and vulnerability and being unprepared. You don’t have to be without fractures to lead—you need to know where to take them. Before they arrive, make the crossing, give it to God, and then go stand at the fire circle anyway.

  • The $140 Price Tag: Human Trafficking and Imago Dei
    Aug 31 2026

In this episode of Resilient Fire, Dave draws on his background to examine the psychological mechanism of dehumanization—how captors strip identity and reduce individuals to numbers—and compares it to recent headlines involving human trafficking and exploitation. Analyzing a news story where a human being was reduced to a $140 transaction alongside the successful recovery of 163 missing children during Florida's Operation Statewide Shield, Dave contrasts the world's exploitative tendency to commodify people with the biblical truth that every individual carries inherent dignity as an image-bearer of God. Pointing to Scripture from Genesis, 1 Corinthians, and 1 Peter, he emphasizes that human worth is non-negotiable and established by God rather than market value, ultimately challenging listeners to examine their own consumption habits, recognize exploitation in their communities, and actively pursue the lost just as God does.

  • When You Can't See What's Next
    Aug 24 2026

What do you do when you can't see what's next? In this episode, Dave draws from a night of land navigation in complete darkness and an airborne operation over the Nevada desert to explore what it means to trust God when you don't have the whole map. Psalm 119:105 reminds us that God's Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path—not a floodlight showing us everything ahead. When fear, fatigue, and uncertainty make the wrong path look attractive, we need a fixed reference point we can trust more than our feelings. Sometimes faith means taking the next step; sometimes it means trusting God while you're falling. Either way, you don't need to see the whole route—you need the next bearing, the next step of obedience, and the confidence that God hasn't lost track of you in the dark.

  • The First Mile Lies
    Aug 10 2026

In this episode of the Resilient Fire Podcast, Dave uses the experience of a triathlon “brick workout” to explore what it feels like to enter a new season of life and faith. Just as the first mile after a hard bike ride can feel awkward, painful, and completely out of rhythm, transitions often make us question whether we're on the right path. Through the physical realities of adaptation, personal experience, and Scripture, Dave examines what happens when we leave behind old habits, identities, coping mechanisms, and sources of strength that no longer belong in the season God is leading us into. Ultimately, the episode points us to Christ as the foundation for every transition, reminding us that we don't have to understand the entire race to take the next faithful step—and that what feels like failure or discomfort may simply be the beginning of adaptation, growth, and deeper dependence on God.

  • The Attention Sink
    Jul 20 2026

Have you ever felt exhausted before your day even started? In this episode, Dave explores the quiet, spiritual battle happening every time we reach for our phones — and why distraction, not doubt, may be the enemy's favorite weapon against our faith. Drawing on lessons from personnel recovery and the ancient wisdom of the Desert Fathers, Dave unpacks why guarding your attention isn't about productivity — it's about worship. You'll learn a simple "First Filter" question to run every piece of content through before it takes up space in your mind, and three practical habits to help you reclaim focus, hear God's whisper again, and stop letting the noise disciple you instead of Scripture.
