From childhood memories of playing piano alongside her sister to her family’s musical traditions, Sarah reflects on how music has brought generations together and created memories she will cherish.

Lily and Sarah discuss how her relationship with the piano has evolved, from learning classical pieces to discovering new ways to express herself through music. Sarah also opens up about navigating perfectionism, managing nerves, and finding the balance between pursuing her passions and other commitments. She shares how playing the piano offers her a sense of calm and allows her to be present in the moment, as well as why music is about how you feel as much as how it sounds.

This episode is a reminder that passion doesn’t have to be about perfection. It can be a source of connection, comfort, and creativity, bringing people together across generations.

In this episode, the Ferdinando & Luigi Innocenti Foundation team heads to Brighton for the Sussex Final of the National Speak Out Challenge, delivered by Speakers Trust in partnership with the Ferdinando & Luigi Innocenti Foundation, to explore the power of finding your voice and speaking about the things you care about.

Over the past year, up to 300 young people from across Sussex have taken part in public speaking workshops to develop their confidence and communication skills. In this episode, our host, Lily Mott, speaks with some of the young people who made it to the final.

Throughout the episode, young participants share the stories and issues behind their speeches. They also reflect on what they learned about themselves through the process, how public speaking challenged their confidence, and what it means to them to speak about something that genuinely matters to them.

Lily also speaks with Victoria Costello and James Davies from Speakers Trust about the importance of giving young people the skills, confidence and platform to be heard, while Ruth Pryce, an event judge and trustee for the Foundation, reflects on the power of hearing young people share their experiences in their own words.

This episode is a celebration of young people's voices and a reminder that sometimes finding your passion starts with being given the space to speak about what matters to you.

They also explore why passions, creativity, and meaningful human connection may become some of our greatest strengths in the years ahead.

Alongside this wider conversation, Alex reflects on her own passion for singing in a choir and how music reminds her of the importance of community and doing something simply because it brings joy.
