  • The Night Chicago Died: The Strange History Behind Paper Lace's 1974 Hit
    Oct 27 2026

In the summer of 1974, Nottingham club band Paper Lace scored an unlikely American number-one hit with "The Night Chicago Died," a dramatic tale of an Al Capone shootout against the Chicago police. After watching their UK chart-topper "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" get hijacked in the United States by a rival band, Paper Lace and songwriters Mitch Murray and Peter Callander struck back with a roaring gangster anthem set on the nonexistent "East Side" of Chicago—which would actually put the battle straight in Lake Michigan. Even though the record sold over two million copies and topped the Billboard Hot 100, strict union work-permit rules kept the band from ever setting foot in America to celebrate their biggest triumph.

  • Coward of the County: The Story Behind Kenny Rogers' Hit
    Oct 19 2026

“Coward of the County: The Story Behind Kenny Rogers’ 1979 Country Hit” is a music history deep dive into one of country music’s most famous story songs.

The song tells of Tommy, a quiet young man branded a coward by the whole county because of a deathbed promise he made to his imprisoned father: walk away from trouble and turn the other cheek. When the three Gatlin brothers assault his girlfriend Becky while he is at work, Tommy faces an impossible choice between honoring his father’s final words and defending the woman he loves.

The climactic barroom confrontation and Tommy’s quiet justification, “sometimes you gotta fight when you’re a man,” turned a dark narrative of revenge and manhood into one of Rogers’ signature story songs.

Join us as we unpack the story, the drama, and the legacy of this country classic.

  • Billy Don't Be a Hero: The Strange History Behind the Song
    Oct 14 2026

“Billy Don't Be A Hero: The Strange History” brings you rock and pop music history on Music History Cafe.

A chirpy 1974 pop hit about a young soldier who ignores his fiancée’s pleas, dies a “hero,” and leaves her to throw away the official letter of his death. Explore how British songwriters Mitch Murray and Peter Callander turned a Civil War story song into a transatlantic chart-topper that audiences linked to Vietnam, how Paper Lace’s UK #1 was preempted in America by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods’ near-identical cover, and why this upbeat tragedy remains one of the era’s most debated (and cheesiest) smash hits.
