  • Sylvia Baker de Perkal - Translator & Artist
    Jun 19 2021

Sylvia Baker de Perkal and her Californian husband Adam moved from banking careers in  Madrid to live in the countryside near the Mallorcan village of Algaida. This was twenty-six years ago, and they still live in the same rural home they fell in love with when they came to look for a property on the island.

Sylvia and Adam each have their own successful businesses in Mallorca: Sylvia is a highly qualified translator, specialising in legal and financial translations; Adam runs his wine importing company. Sylvia also devotes time to her passion for creating art; four of her canvases hang in a smart new hotel in Lisbon.

Sylvia talks about sharing their environment with animals (some of which you'll hear in the background), the changes they made to their home when they arrived, how she integrated into the local community, what it's like to start a business here, and some of the illusions people have about living in Mallorca.

  • Kate Brittan - Australian Expat, Foodie, and Fledgling Farmer
    Apr 30 2021

This episode’s guest, with her veterinarian husband, and their young son took a sabbatical from their life in Sydney to discover Europe. They planned to experience living in a city, the countryside, and Provence (France). After some months in Aix-en-Provence, they headed to the south of Spain for some warmth, basing themselves in Seville. Next stop on the Brittan family’s European sabbatical was Mallorca – an island they’d never visited before.

After renting a rural property for a while, they realised they’d fallen in love with the largest of the Balearic Islands. In September 2019 they bought a beautiful mountain finca with twenty acres of land where they’ve created a family lifestyle that’s very different from their former lifestyle Down Under.

Kate Brittan is a passionate foodie who originally trained in Australia as a chef before entering the corporate tech world. Since moving to the largest of the Balearic Islands, she’s started the popular Facebook group ‘The Mallorca Foodies’.

Kate talks about the impact of Covid and the Australian wildfires on their family life, their impressive plans for the farm, solving the problem of sourcing favourite ingredients for cooking, the surprising way she integrated with her Mallorcan neighbours, and why she loves her nearest town, Inca. And, of course, she shares her top tips for anyone wanting to move to Mallorca.

  • Annie Verrinder - Wedding Planner, Celebrant ... and More
    Apr 16 2021

Annie Verrinder swapped living and working in Mallorca’s vibrant capital, Palma, for the tranquillity and slower pace of life in a rural village near the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. As a wedding planner and celebrant, who loves what she does, Annie knows the whole island well.

In our conversation, Annie talks about her other work as an acupuncturist and couples’ therapist, what she loves about living in the village of Alaró, and why Mallorca is a great place to get married. Annie also has useful advice for anyone thinking of moving to the island and, as a qualified PADI diver, mentions some favourite places for close encounters of the underwater kind.

  • Caroline Fuller - Gardening in Mallorca
    Feb 2 2021

The Mediterranean climate and the prospect of growing something more exotic than in a northern European garden are only two reasons many people who move to rural Mallorca become keen gardeners.

Yorkshire-born Caroline Fuller is not only an enthusiastic gardener, but also blogs about gardening at her home in the Mallorcan countryside. Caroline also contributes a gardening column (and a pet column) to the island’s English-language newspaper, Majorca Daily Bulletin.

Hear about her life with husband David (known as o/h in her blog), their dogs, and chickens, as she talks about their no-dig lasagne garden, the lessons she’s learnt about gardening in Mallorca, and how a pair of David’s pants revealed something interesting about their soil.

If you’re on the island and keen on gardening, check out the Facebook group: Mallorca Gardeners.

Caroline’s newspaper columns The Potting Shed and Pet Bulletin are published in the weekend editions of www.majorcadailybulletin.com
