  • Naina Moray: The Prayer Hidden in a Love Song
    Sep 16 2026

A ghost's monologue from Haider. A 400-year-old Punjabi Sufi kafi. A Coke Studio thumri and a Bollywood needle-drop, decades apart, both circling the same words. This episode of Kavinaama follows "Naina Moray" — sung by Javed Bashir and Akbar Ali — back to its source in Shah Hussain's kafi "Man Atkeya Beparwah De Naal," the same phrase behind Shamur and Sachin-Jigar's "Dil La Leya Beparwah De Naal" from the film Roohi. Kshitij and Burair trace the legend of Heer and Ranjha, why Sufi poets reach for worldly love (ishq-e-majazi) to describe love of the Divine (ishq-e-haqiqi), and what makes thumri its own distinct classical form.

Shamur is actually the Italian duo (Emanuele Marascia & Sandro Murru) who first sampled this Punjabi hook back in 2004 for their track "Let the Music Play." Sachin-Jigar reused that same sample for "Dil La Leya Beparwah De Naal" in Roohi (2021) — which is why Shamur's name is attached to a 2021 Bollywood song despite being a 2000s Italian act

  • Saadgi To Hamari Zara Dekhiye: One Night's Promise, a Lifetime of Waiting (Saba Akbarabadi)
    Sep 30 2026

He believed a promise that was only for one night, and he spent his whole life waiting for it. Kshitij and Burair explore Saba Akbarabadi's ghazal "Saadgi To Hamari Zara Dekhiye," made immortal by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's qawwali. They read it as a love poem and as a portrait of a man disappointed in himself, full of regret and self-pity, who chose heartbreak knowing exactly how it would end. The conversation also covers renditions by Zeeshan Ali, Zartasha Zainab, Akansha Grover, and Team Sukhan at Jashn-e-Rekhta.
