This week on Is the Book Better?, we're heading to Whistle Stop, Alabama, to compare Fannie Flagg's beloved novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe with the iconic 1991 film starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker.

I watched Fried Green Tomatoes far too often and far too young, so this one comes with a hefty dose of childhood nostalgia. But does the book offer something the film can't?

We explore the unforgettable characters of Idgie Threadgoode, Ruth Jamison, Ninny Threadgoode and Evelyn Couch, the differences between the book and movie, the darker themes hiding beneath the Southern charm, and the mystery of what really happened to Idgie.

I also share my fascination with Fannie Flagg, including the embarrassing number of years I spent believing that the Fannie Flagg from Match Game and the author of Fried Green Tomatoes were two completely different people.

From the Whistle Stop Café to the infamous barbecue, we discuss the changes Fannie Flagg made when adapting her own novel for the screen and why I find that creative process so impressive.

The book is wonderful, but can it compete with a film I've loved since childhood?

Spoiler warning: This episode contains major spoilers for both the novel and the film, including the ending.

Join me for a nostalgic, funny and heartfelt book-versus-movie discussion as we answer the all-important question: Is the book better, though?

  • Fever Pitch - Nick Hornby Vs Colin Firth

Is Fever Pitch better as a book or a film? This week on Is the Book Better?, I’m comparing Nick Hornby’s 1992 football memoir Fever Pitch with the 1997 film adaptation starring Colin Firth and Ruth Gemmell.

As an Arsenal fan myself, I should be the perfect audience for Hornby’s all-consuming obsession with Arsenal Football Club — but even I think he might need to calm down a bit.

I get into why the film’s added romance actually makes the story work better, why Colin Firth makes the lead infinitely more likeable, and why I’m obsessed with the 90s British fashion, old Highbury, vintage Arsenal shirts and the general late-80s/90s football aesthetic.

We also talk George Graham’s Arsenal, the legendary 1988–89 title race, Liverpool vs Arsenal at Anfield and Michael Thomas’ iconic title-winning goal, plus what Fever Pitch gets right about football fandom, relationships, masculinity, fathers and sons, and loving a football club far more than is probably healthy.

And I’ve even got a real-life Fever Pitch story involving a Leicester City season ticket, a marriage ultimatum, a Premier League title… and a divorce.

Nick Hornby vs Colin Firth. Book vs movie. Arsenal vs having a functioning adult relationship.

    So… is the book better?

In this episode, we're comparing Shelby Van Pelt's bestselling novel with the new film adaptation, breaking down the biggest differences between the book and the movie. From Marcellus the giant Pacific octopus being even sassier on the page, to Cameron's very different characterisation, we'll explore what changed, what worked, and whether those changes improved the story.

We also discuss Sally Field's outstanding performance as Tova, Lewis Pullman's portrayal of Cameron, Alfred Molina's perfect voice work as Marcellus, and why this adaptation has received such a positive reaction from both readers and film audiences.

Plus, we're diving into online reviews and fan reactions to see what the internet really thinks about Remarkably Bright Creatures and whether the book still comes out on top.

  • Book Vs Movie - California Schemin'
    Aug 9 2026

In this episode of Is the Book Better Though?, we’re talking California Schemin’ the unbelievable true story of Scottish rappers Silibil N’ Brains, aka Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, who fooled the music industry by pretending to be an established American hip-hop duo from California.

First, we get into the California Schemin’ book: the blagging, the fake American accents, the music, the near misses and the increasingly complicated task of keeping the lie alive. The book can be repetitive, but is that actually part of its charm? There’s something about that repetition that captures the reality of being a performing artist – gig, travel, promote, perform, repeat – except Gavin and Billy also had to keep performing their fake identities when they stepped off stage.

Then there’s the audiobook, narrated by Gavin Bain himself, where you can still catch a little lilt from the American accent he spent so long perfecting.

After the book, we move on to the California Schemin’ film adaptation. What does the movie get right, what gets lost in adapting such a bizarre true story, and why do Brains and Silibil feel different from the people we meet in the book? We also ask whether this story really belonged in a two-hour movie at all – or whether an eight-part TV series could have better captured their organic rise, increasingly ridiculous schemes and constant fear of finally being found out.

And, naturally, I have some thoughts about creative partnerships, being the person who writes, produces and edits everything, and what happens when the workload isn't quite as evenly distributed as everyone thinks...

So: California Schemin’ book vs movie – is the book actually better though?

This week we're heading behind the walls of Shawshank Prison to explore Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the story that inspired one of the most beloved films ever made.

The problem? I've seen the film so many times that I wasn't sure I could judge the book fairly. From the very first page, I wasn't imagining the characters—I was seeing Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne and hearing Morgan Freeman narrating every chapter as Red.

We discuss whether the novella stands on its own, why Shawshank Prison feels so real, the themes of hope, friendship, institutionalisation and redemption, and whether Morgan Freeman's casting is one of the greatest examples of colour-blind casting in cinema history.

We also compare the book and the film, explore what each version does better, and answer the big question: is this one of those rare occasions where the adaptation actually improves on the source material?

Plus, I share my experience visiting the famous filming location and explain why Shawshank itself might be the most important character in the story.

    • The Shawshank Redemption book review
    • Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King

The Devil Wears Prada Book Review | Is the Book Better Than the Film?

This week on The Dad Book Club, we're reading The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger—the bestselling novel that inspired the iconic film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. But here's the confession: I had absolutely no idea it was a book.

Often remembered as a glamorous story about the fashion industry, The Devil Wears Prada is actually a sharp workplace satire about toxic bosses, career ambition, burnout, and what happens when your job starts taking over your life. We explore the differences between the book and the film, why Miranda Priestly is even more terrifying on the page, and whether Andrea Sachs is as sympathetic as audiences remember.

We discuss the novel's portrayal of office culture, the pressures of success, work-life balance, and why so many readers—and viewers—see their own careers reflected in Andrea's journey through the world of high fashion.

Plus, we answer the big question: is The Devil Wears Prada one of those rare cases where the film is actually better than the book?

Join us as we dive into one of the most famous book-to-film adaptations ever made and discover whether this modern classic deserves its legendary reputation.

This week on The Dad Book Club Podcast, we're diving into The Damned Utd by David Peace, the bestselling football novel that explores the infamous 44 days of legendary manager Brian Clough at Leeds United.

We compare the book, audiobook and film adaptation, discussing David Peace's intense writing style, the non-linear narrative, Brian Clough's obsession with Don Revie and Leeds United, and why the novel feels less like a football story and more like a psychological character study.

As a host from Derby, there's also a personal connection to the story, with discussion of Derby County, Brian Clough, Peter Taylor, Leeds United, English football history, football rivalries and the legacy of one of football's most fascinating figures.

Why does the Bridge to Terabithia book hit so much harder than the film? Does the movie's visual depiction of Terabithia enhance the story or take away some of the magic? And why is Richard Armitage's audiobook performance one of the best ways to experience this modern children's classic?
