Mail Coming | Adventures with Admiral Byrd - Antarctic Radio History
    Nov 4 2026
Far from home, news of the mail means more than an ordinary delivery. Hear a surviving fragment of radio’s connection with Antarctic exploration.

Mail Coming belongs to the collection Adventures with Admiral Byrd, associated with the broadcasting history of Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic expeditions. This short recording brings listeners towards the human side of polar exploration: distance, isolation and the value of contact with the outside world.

Radio allowed expedition news and voices to reach audiences who could never travel to Little America themselves. Hearing a surviving recording offers a different perspective from reading an expedition account, placing the sound of broadcasting beside the history of exploration.

    Recording: Mail Coming
    Collection: Adventures with Admiral Byrd
    Duration: approximately eleven minutes
Listening themes: Antarctic exploration, communication and broadcasting history.
