The cold has certainly arrived here on the North East coast, but so have the stars and moon. These are the weeks for soup, for an extra layer, and for warming school jumpers on radiators (there is nothing my youngest enjoys more). And as we warm ourselves with tea, stews, and blankets, I wanted to introduce you to NEON TIDES, my monthly, slow-format audio essay exploring how we might live more imaginative lives (available here or wherever you get your podcasts, just search for Neon Tides). In this first episode, Ghosts in our Machines, we embrace our senses and head out into the mist of Whitby, explore how our modern world has waged war on shadows, and listen to slow decay of magnetic tape. And there’s gingerbread cake, a zombie invasion, and cedarwood candles too. This is a gentle listen and very much designed for unhurried listening. Pour something hot, settle into a comfortable chair in the quietest corner of the house, and join me on my journey into imagination.Below, you’ll find inspiration from my explorations as well as this month’s Ghosts in our Machines reading list and mixtape. And you can find visuals in my newsletter Fluorescent Edges. The Curiosity CabinetWritings of light and dark…* In Praise of Shadows (Jun’ichirō Tanizaki)* The Transparency Society (Byung-Chul Han)* The House in the Cerulean Sea (TJ Klune)* Night Vision (Jean Sprackland)* Dracula (Bram Stoker)Films and Series of secrecy and the unwritten…* Arrival (Film, dir. This post is public so feel free to share it.About MeHi! I’m Kieran Fenby-Hulse. I’m a writer, performer, and Professor of Civic Imagination. After 20 years working in Higher Education, I decided to start again by returning to my passion for creativity. Now, I help thinkers, creators, leaders, and renegades to reignite their purpose, reclaim their agency, and design the futures they want.I live on the salt-weathered coast of Redcar, where the North Sea collides with the rugged landscape and industrial heritage of Teesside. My work blends twenty years of academic leadership with performance, craft, poetry, and systems thinking.I create spaces on the page, online, and by the sea for people wanting to move from firefighting and the churn of the everyday and start to think otherwise, imagine new futures, and cultivate radical creative agency.Find out more at kieranfenbyhulse.co.uk and onelittlespark.uk This is a public episode.
