• Reflections: Grief and Biblical Marriage – How Loss Strengthened Our Partnership
    Jan 4 2026

In this Reflections episode, Emily shares vulnerably how the deaths of her mother and father tested and transformed her marriage.

From midnight screams of grief to learning biblical submission and servant leadership, she reflects on unlearning independence, embracing God’s design for marriage (Ephesians 5, 1 Timothy 2:12), and finding deeper union through shared sorrow.

Especially for Christian women navigating loss within marriage and motherhood.

  • Reflections: Closing a Year of Grief
    Dec 30 2025

Good morning, friends. Thank you for joining this end-of-year episode of From Tears to Theosis: Reflections. I'm Emily, and whether you're here for the first time or a returning listener, this is our safe space to sit with grief—and with God.

As we stand on December 30, 2025, reflecting on a year of trials (for me, the loss of my father, closing a difficult chapter, and surrendering to God's calling as a mother and steward of grief), I share how Lamentations 3's abrupt shift from despair to hope became a lifeline. We dive into parallels with Job's unwavering faith, the dangers of grief unchecked, the power of the Jesus Prayer in our darkest pits, and God's boundless mercy that meets us no matter how far we've strayed.

Key verse: "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

As we step into 2026, may we carry compassion for ourselves and others walking through loss.

What about you? How has God shown His mercy to you this year, even in hardship? Share in the comments below—your story might encourage someone else navigating grief right now. If this episode resonates, please like, subscribe, and hit the bell for more reflections. Sharing this with a friend who needs hope today would mean the world.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners. Amen.

  • Reflections: The Gift of Goodbye
    Dec 23 2025

    Episode Description:

In this deeply personal reflection, I share the story of losing my mother to cancer—not just the heartbreak of the loss, but the miracle of the friendship that carried me through it.

When my mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, I was living in a garage apartment, working as a server, and barely scraping by. I faced an impossible choice between poverty and being present for my mother’s final weeks. This is the story of how a friend’s generosity saved us from homelessness and gave me the greatest gift of all: the chance to say goodbye.

We discuss the harsh realities of the "working poor," the weight of anticipating grief, and how God uses the people around us to provide stability when our world is falling apart. Join me as we explore how even in our darkest moments of loss, we are being guided from tears toward Theosis.

Topics: Grief, Cancer, Friendship, Orthodox Christianity, Poverty, Motherhood.

  • Reflections: The Empty Chair at the Feast
    Dec 19 2025

In this episode, we explore the reality of holiday grief through the Eastern Orthodox perspective of bright sadness. Whether you’re coping with the loss of a parent or looking for traditional wisdom during the Nativity season, these reflections offer a path toward healing and hope.

    Episode Description

The holidays are supposed to be a time of family and joy, but for many of us, the lights only serve to cast longer shadows over the empty chairs at our tables. In this episode of From Tears to Theosis: Reflections, Emily explores the "bright sadness" of navigating the Nativity season while carrying the weight of loss.

Drawing from her own experience of losing both parents in very different spiritual seasons, she contrasts the "grief of chaos" with the "grief of stewardship". Whether you're navigating your first Christmas without a loved one or your tenth, this reflection offers you permission to not be "fine" and points toward the profound Orthodox hope of reunion and Memory Eternal.

    Show Notes & Highlights:

    • Permission to Grieve: An acknowledgement that it’s okay to decline invitations and feel the weight of the season.

    • Bright Sadness: Connecting the Lenten concept of charmolypi (joyful sorrow) to the experience of holiday loss.

    • A Tale of Two Griefs: * The Mother: Remembering a sudden loss and navigating the "absurdity" of grief without a spiritual compass.

      • The Father: Reflecting on the final year of caregiving through Alzheimer’s and the "liturgy of stewardship".

    • The Theology of Reunion: Finding solace in the idea that our loved ones are celebrating a heavenly feast while we struggle through an earthly one.

    • Memory Eternal: How the Orthodox tradition transforms grief from a black hole into a window of hope.

  • Reflections: When Everything Stopped
    Dec 18 2025

It was a beautiful autumn afternoon on my husband’s birthday when the phone rang, and the world narrowed to a single, shattering point.

In this debut episode of Reflections, I share the story of the month that changed my life: losing my mother and father exactly thirty days apart. I explore the undeniable synchronicity of their passing, the crushing weight of grief that the corporate world could not accommodate, and the moment I realized I had to walk away from my career to truly steward my vocation as a daughter, wife, and mother.

This is a reading of my latest essay on the "pause"—the space where plans dissolve, and we are forced to decide if we will just cope, or if we will let the sorrow draw us toward God.

Topics: Grief, Parental Loss, Eastern Orthodoxy, Stewardship of Talent, Leaving the Workforce.

  • Welcome: What is Reflections?
    Dec 18 2025

Welcome to From Tears to Theosis. I’m Emily.

This feed is an audio companion to my written work—a space for those who find listening easier than reading. In this "Reflections" series, I will be reading my own essays on loss, sorrow, healing, and the slow journey toward union with God (Theosis).

This isn't about "fixing" grief. It is about offering quiet company while we walk through it.

Future episodes featuring full conversations with others walking similar paths are coming soon.
