  • Fireside Legends, Episode 4: Unraveling the Aftermath
    Oct 23 2026

On January 14th, 1697, a judge stood in a Boston church while his confession was read aloud. Samuel Sewall had signed the death warrants at Salem — and now, in public, he took the blame and the shame of it on himself.

How did we get from the gallows of September 1692 to that moment? This week on Fireside Legends, we trace how the Salem witch trials came apart — and what happened after.

    In this episode:

    • The tide turns — the accusations reach Andover, a magistrate refuses to sign another warrant, and the charges start climbing toward the governor's own household
    • The ministers speak — Increase Mather's Cases of Conscience and the line that echoes through our legal tradition: better that ten suspected witches escape than one innocent person be condemned
    • "Enough" — Governor Phips shuts the court down, the new court bars spectral evidence, and the prisoners go home… if their families can pay their jail fees
    • The repentance — Sewall's confession, the jurors' apology, Ann Putnam Jr.'s 1706 statement, and the exonerations that were still being finished in 2022
    • What was really going on? — ergot poisoning, mass hysteria, village feuds, frontier trauma… and why no single theory explains Salem
    • Robert Calef vs. Cotton Mather — the merchant who challenged the ministers in print, and the book Harvard burned
    • Plus The Witness Stand and Fact or Fireside Tale: Were all the victims women? Did the hangings really happen on Gallows Hill?

The people who did this were not monsters — they were pastors, magistrates, and neighbors. And when some of them finally saw what they'd done, they did something remarkable.

Next week: our final episode — we put the whole Salem story under the light of Scripture.

Fireside Legends — where we trace the stories passed down around the fire back to what actually happened. Hosted by Justin and his son.

  • Fireside Legends, Episode 3: The Court and the Gallows

Fireside Legends, Episode 3: The Court and the Gallows

June 10, 1692. A cart rolls up a rocky hill outside Salem Town. On it sits Bridget Bishop—the first of the condemned. By the end of September, eighteen more will follow her to the gallows, and one man will be pressed to death under stones.

This week on Fireside Legends, we step inside the Court of Oyer and Terminer: the special tribunal created to end the crisis. We examine the rules (and the lack of them), the dangerous power of spectral evidence, and the ministers’ ambiguous advice that urged both caution and “speedy and vigorous prosecution.”

You’ll meet the people who faced the court and the hill: Bridget Bishop and her poppets; the five women hanged on July 19, including Rebecca Nurse and Sarah Good; John Proctor, who wrote desperately from prison; the Reverend George Burroughs, who recited the Lord’s Prayer on the ladder; Margaret Jacobs, who recanted after accusing her own grandfather; and eighty-one-year-old Giles Corey, who refused to plead and died under the weight of stones.

We also name those who never reached the gallows—the ones who died in jail—and sit with the letters, petitions, and diaries that still speak from the middle of the storm.

This is the hardest episode so far. We slow down, put faces to the names, and refuse to let the dead become statistics. Because the truth was being spoken the whole time. It just wasn’t being heard.

Next week: the panic begins to break.

Fireside Legends traces the stories passed down around the fire back to what actually happened: real history, real witnesses, and an honest look at how a story becomes a legend.

  • Fireside Legends, Episode 2: The Accusations Spread
    Oct 9 2026

Fireside Legends, Episode 2: The Accusations Spread

March 1692. A crowded tavern. A magistrate who asks the accused not "Did you do this?" but "What evil spirit have you familiarity with?"

In Episode 2 of our Salem Witch Trials series, we sit in on the first examinations and hear the confession that changed everything. We meet Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba, and separate the historical record from the legend that grew up around them. We also learn about the afflicted girls, the Sunday they interrupted a sermon in the meetinghouse, and Martha Corey, a skeptic whose doubt became a mark against her.

Then we meet Rebecca Nurse, one of the most respected women in the community, and trace how the machinery worked: spectral evidence, public examinations, and a system where confessing kept you alive and denying it could get you hanged. Along the way, we look at the sources themselves (the examination records, Deodat Lawson's eyewitness account, and the neighbors' petition for Rebecca Nurse) and play a round of Fact or Fireside Tale.

Was Tituba a Black woman from Barbados who practiced voodoo? Did it all start as a prank by bored girls? Was Rebecca Nurse really found not guilty and then hanged anyway?
