On January 14th, 1697, a judge stood in a Boston church while his confession was read aloud. Samuel Sewall had signed the death warrants at Salem — and now, in public, he took the blame and the shame of it on himself.
How did we get from the gallows of September 1692 to that moment? This week on Fireside Legends, we trace how the Salem witch trials came apart — and what happened after.
In this episode:
- The tide turns — the accusations reach Andover, a magistrate refuses to sign another warrant, and the charges start climbing toward the governor's own household
- The ministers speak — Increase Mather's Cases of Conscience and the line that echoes through our legal tradition: better that ten suspected witches escape than one innocent person be condemned
- "Enough" — Governor Phips shuts the court down, the new court bars spectral evidence, and the prisoners go home… if their families can pay their jail fees
- The repentance — Sewall's confession, the jurors' apology, Ann Putnam Jr.'s 1706 statement, and the exonerations that were still being finished in 2022
- What was really going on? — ergot poisoning, mass hysteria, village feuds, frontier trauma… and why no single theory explains Salem
- Robert Calef vs. Cotton Mather — the merchant who challenged the ministers in print, and the book Harvard burned
- Plus The Witness Stand and Fact or Fireside Tale: Were all the victims women? Did the hangings really happen on Gallows Hill?
The people who did this were not monsters — they were pastors, magistrates, and neighbors. And when some of them finally saw what they'd done, they did something remarkable.
Next week: our final episode — we put the whole Salem story under the light of Scripture.
Fireside Legends — where we trace the stories passed down around the fire back to what actually happened. Hosted by Justin and his son.
