  • What If Your Frustration Is The Training

Someone laughs in your face for a word you chose with care, and suddenly you’re not talking about ideas anymore. You’re talking about identity, belonging, and whether your compassion is real when it’s tested. That’s the moment I’m working with today, starting with a visit to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, where I’m reminded of the bodhisattva, the person who vows to return again and again until all beings are free from suffering. Beautiful in theory. Much harder on a random patio with a stranger who’s carrying his own hurt.

I walk through how a conversation about mindfulness and self-compassion turns sharp when I mention my meditation teacher and sangha. The pushback is intense, and the word “bodhisattva” gets mocked. What comes up for me is what I call wrathful compassion: not sweetness, not passivity, but a clear, grounded willingness to interrupt harmful certainty without becoming cruel. We also explore why deep compassion isn’t commonly taught, and how patience gets built through the very moments that make us want to shut down or strike back.

Then I share a concrete practice you can try immediately: the Patience Prompt. It’s a three-part journaling and awareness tool for real life triggers at work, at home, and in traffic. If you’re a leader who can stay calm in meetings but loses it at home, or if you keep promising yourself you’ll be more patient “next time,” this is for you.

If this lands, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s carrying a lot, and leave a review so more people can find Fierce Encouragement. What’s one situation where you need patience to show up differently this week?

  • Whose Goal Is This?

A client shared a line today: if you’re not doing the things you need to do, maybe you just don’t want it enough. I think the question starts one step too late. In this episode, I share a reflection from a meditation retreat in Kansas City and a three-question tool to find out why you want what you want, and whose goal it is. Try it on one goal this week. To talk it through, book a coaching conversation or coffee chat. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find Fierce Encouragement.

  • The Awareness Gap
    Sep 27 2026

Most workplaces don’t have a “culture” problem. They have an awareness problem, and it shows up everywhere: leaders who stay disconnected, teams that don’t feel safe telling the truth, and employees who learn to keep their struggle quiet because honesty feels risky. I’m Mark, and in Fierce Encouragement I’m naming the gap I’ve seen across hundreds of conversations with leaders, coaches, and teams: we say we want psychological safety, but we punish it the other 51 weeks of the year.

We get into why culture decks, mission statements, and once-a-year team-building events often miss the real dysfunction and misalignment. I also unpack how performance reviews can quietly turn into shame and blame when leaders avoid their own inner state, and how that avoidance spreads through the whole team. Trust doesn’t come from a poster. Trust grows when we build self-awareness first, then practice honest communication from a grounded place.

To make this practical, I share a simple nervous system reset I call “the pause that matters.” When you’re drowning in tickets, getting pushed on delivery, or heading into a crucial conversation, pausing with a slow belly breath and an even slower exhale can pull you out of fight, flight, or freeze and back into clear thinking. If you’re tired of pretending the culture talk is working, listen through to the end, try the pause today, and let me know what you notice.
