  • Episode 165: Because It Is Great
    Oct 29 2026

Psalm 25 is the first fully alphabetical psalm, a prayer built on the letters of the alphabet by a man whose life had come apart. In this episode, we see why that scaffolding matters when grief makes coherent speech impossible. We watch him lift his soul to God, the exact opposite of the disqualification in Psalm 24, and ask four times in two verses to be taught. He asks God to remember his own mercies and to forget the sins of a youth he was still wincing at decades later. We find a "therefore" that says God's goodness is precisely why he takes sinners as students, paths worn into ruts by mercy, and the boldest sentence in the psalm: pardon my sin, because it is great. Then a man with his eyes up and his feet tangled ends by praying for everybody.

  • Episode 164: The Guest Room Won’t Do
    Oct 27 2026

Psalm 24 begins by declaring that every square inch of the earth belongs to God, and ends with that same God standing outside a gate asking to be let in. In this episode, we see how its three puzzling sections hold together around one theme: entrance. Two processions move in opposite directions, one coming up the hill to God and one arriving from outside. We find that the qualifications for entry are entirely ethical, clean hands and a pure heart, and that almost none of them could be checked by a gatekeeper, because they live behind the door we all keep closed. We trace the lift-and-carry word that ties the psalm together, and we listen to gates being told to grow taller for a King who will not fit through the low doors we build for him.

  • Episode 163: Hunted by Goodness
    Oct 21 2026

Psalm 23 is so familiar that most of us have stopped hearing it. In this episode, we clean the soot off a few spots. The shepherd of the ancient world was a royal title and a rough job, and the man who wrote this psalm had killed a lion and a bear with his hands. We notice that "I shall not want" has no object attached, and that the psalm supplies its own inventory of what God has pledged. We watch the pronouns change at the exact center of the poem, where David stops talking about God and starts talking to him, down in the canyon. We find two sticks, one pointed at enemies and one pointed at us, both called a comfort. And we discover that goodness and mercy do not stroll politely behind us. They run us down all the days of our lives.

  • Episode 162: Naming the Whole Scroll
    Oct 20 2026

Psalm 22 opens with the most desolate sentence in the Bible and ends by announcing that everything has been accomplished. In this episode, we learn that ancient scrolls were named by their opening words, which means a dying man quoting the first line may have been naming the whole psalm. We trace its architecture: three times the sufferer says what his senses tell him, and three times faith answers with memory rather than argument. We hear mockers quote his theology back at him as a joke, and find they were right about God's delight and wrong about what slow rescue means. We watch the bulls, lions, and dogs close in and the garments divided, and then, mid-verse with nothing visibly changed, the screaming stops and the singing starts. The psalm ends at a table reaching to the ends of the earth, because the choir is made out of the crowd.

  • Episode 161: Send the Note
    Oct 19 2026

Psalm 21 is a thank-you note built right into the hymnbook. In this episode, we see how it answers Psalm 20 line by line: what the people asked for before the battle, God granted after it. Then we watch the homecoming, where the verb for God meeting his king used to signal an ambush and now brings blessing. We listen to the grammar of the gifts, because the king never seizes anything: the crown is placed, life is given, glory is bestowed. At the center stands the hinge, that the king trusts and God keeps covenant love, in that order. Then the psalm hardens into judgment on those who actively hate the anointed, before the whole congregation lifts the applause off the king and onto God. Along the way we learn why gratitude needs structure, and why we've all been running on capital we never raised.

  • Episode 160: Raise the Banners Early
    Oct 16 2026

Psalm 20 is the sound of a nation praying on the eve of battle. In this episode, a congregation stands around their king and says out loud, in God's hearing, every good thing they hope God will do for him: answer you, protect you, remember your offerings, grant your heart's desire. Then the pronouns shift, and the people describe the victory party before the army has even marched. A single voice declares that the Lord saves his anointed, and then comes the hinge: some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. We discover that chariots were the smart bet, which is what makes the verse sting, and that the real test is what you mention first under pressure. Our King has already had his day of trouble, so we can raise the banners early.

  • Episode 159: The Spinach in Your Teeth
    Oct 15 2026

Psalm 19 says God has written two books, and both of them speak. In this episode, we start with the sky, the oldest preacher in the world, pouring out a silent sermon that reaches every corner of the earth without a single word. We follow the sun as it rises like a bridegroom and runs like a champion, and we notice the line that turns the whole psalm: nothing is hidden from its heat. Then the psalm moves indoors, to a word that revives the soul, makes the simple wise, and tastes sweeter than honey. Somewhere in the reading, the word starts reading the psalmist, and he asks God to cleanse him from faults he cannot even see. Along the way we learn why your conscience is not the final authority on you, and why it’s safe to ask God what everyone else already sees.

  • Episode 158: Count the Rescues
    Oct 14 2026

Psalm 18 is the long backward look of an old king who refused to forget. In this episode, we notice that it opens where no other psalm does, with David simply saying he loves the Lord, and then spends fifty verses explaining why. He piles up eight names for God, describes the cords and floods and snares of death that nearly took him, and tells how his cry went straight from the flood into the throne room. What follows is a storm of cosmic power deployed to rescue one man, followed by the tenderest of images: God reaching down to draw him out of deep water and set him in a broad place, simply because he delighted in him. Along the way we learn why love grows out of memory, how to work hard and still hand God the trophy, and why David credited his greatness to God's gentleness.
