Psalm 22 opens with the most desolate sentence in the Bible and ends by announcing that everything has been accomplished. In this episode, we learn that ancient scrolls were named by their opening words, which means a dying man quoting the first line may have been naming the whole psalm. We trace its architecture: three times the sufferer says what his senses tell him, and three times faith answers with memory rather than argument. We hear mockers quote his theology back at him as a joke, and find they were right about God's delight and wrong about what slow rescue means. We watch the bulls, lions, and dogs close in and the garments divided, and then, mid-verse with nothing visibly changed, the screaming stops and the singing starts. The psalm ends at a table reaching to the ends of the earth, because the choir is made out of the crowd.
