• Russell Brand Cleared of One Charge on the Judge’s Direction, Replaced by a Lesser Count, Six Still Stand, Birchmore Autopsy Testimony
    Oct 28 2026
Mr Justice Bennathan directed the jury in Russell Brand’s trial on Tuesday to return a not guilty verdict on count two, indecent assault, telling them: “In respect of count two, I have reached the decision that there is insufficient evidence of indecent assault. That is my decision, not yours.” A male juror was selected to deliver the verdict formally. The judge then added a lesser charge arising from the same 2001 allegation — attempted indecent assault — calling it a slightly artificial process; Brand has pleaded not guilty to it. He now faces three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault, and denies all of them. Jurors also heard four police interviews conducted between November 2023 and July 2025, in which Brand read prepared statements describing a very promiscuous past, said he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity, and said media and police had publicly invited further allegations that were invented or reimagined. The defence case begins. Also: the medical examiner who first ruled Sandra Birchmore’s death a suicide testified she was told there was nothing to suspect, and denied being pressured to change the certificate. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Chris Brown Avoids Prison With a Suspended Sentence for the London Bottle Attack, Russell Brand’s Defence Begins, the Birchmore Autopsy
    Oct 27 2026
Chris Brown, 37, was sentenced Monday at Southwark Crown Court to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty in July to affray over a February 2023 attack on music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. Judge Tony Baumgartner called it serious public violence and said the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head was plainly dangerous; CCTV played in court showed Brown striking Diaw four times with what prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC described as a heavy, square-shaped tequila bottle. Vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who performs as Hoody Baby, received four months, also suspended. In the same building, the third week of Russell Brand’s trial heard statements from the third complainant’s family and from Brand’s former personal assistant, who described his sexual appetite but told the jury she never witnessed him doing anything against the law. Brand denies all seven charges; the prosecution is expected to rest and the defence to begin. And in Boston, the medical evidence is about to decide the Sandra Birchmore case. Garret Fisher reports.

  • GUILTY: Life Without Parole in Faith Hedgepeth’s Murder 14 Years On, Where the Russell Brand Trial Stands, and Ethan Hauschultz
    Oct 26 2026
A Durham County jury convicted Miguel Salguero-Olivares, 33, on Friday of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree burglary in the 2012 killing of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill sophomore and citizen of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, found beaten to death in her Chapel Hill apartment. The case went unsolved for nine years until a 2021 traffic stop produced a DNA sample that matched the scene. Superior Court Judge Keith Gregory sentenced him to life without parole plus consecutive terms; he is appealing. His defense questioned the forensics and presented no evidence. Also: after two weeks of prosecution evidence at Southwark Crown Court, Garret recaps all six complainants in the Russell Brand trial, the defence case that has emerged, and the decision Brand now faces about whether to testify — he denies all seven charges. And in Wisconsin, Timothy Hauschultz was convicted after an eight-year wait and three rejected plea deals in the 2018 death of seven-year-old Ethan Hauschultz. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Russell Brand Trial: The Jury Hears From the People She Told, ‘Put Crazy Back in the Bag’ in the Birchmore Trial, d4vd Gets a Trial Date
    Oct 23 2026
The prosecution in Russell Brand’s trial called the people the fifth complainant says she told — her parents, a sexual health nurse who treated her in 2009, her then-manager, friends and a former boyfriend — in what English courts allow as evidence of a consistent account. The defence used the same witnesses to probe inconsistencies: a message she sent years later saying she was young and stupid and probably as much to blame, a police statement in which her ex-boyfriend said she had “come round” to it, and a best friend’s acknowledgment that the word rape wasn’t used the first time. The jury also heard the second complainant’s 999 call. Brand, 51, denies all seven charges; the prosecution is expected to rest by mid-week. Also: a former colleague testified that Matthew Farwell said he had to “put crazy back in the bag” weeks before Sandra Birchmore’s death, after a friend of hers reported their relationship to Stoughton police. And a Los Angeles judge set a February trial date for David Burke, the singer known as d4vd, who has pleaded not guilty in the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Russell Brand Trial: All Six Women Have Now Been Cross-Examined, Kohberger’s Lawyers Point to the Judge’s Tears, Gloves and Air Freshener
    Oct 22 2026
The fifth complainant in Russell Brand’s trial was cross-examined at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, completing the evidence of all six women. Ian Winter KC put to her that she had been a massive fan, that she went to Brand’s home knowing sex would happen, that she agreed to what took place, and that Brand “had pushed you and probably had treated you like an animal, but he didn’t rape you.” She replied that she did not consent to what happened to her, and told the court: “We are not here to discuss my morality.” She said she had carried guilt and shame for years, for exactly the reason the defence was putting to her — that she brought it on herself. On re-examination she told prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC there had been no conversation beforehand, no warning, and that she asked him to stop. Brand, 51, denies all seven charges. Also: Bryan Kohberger’s appellate lawyer has filed again to disqualify Judge Steven Hippler, citing reports the judge appeared to wipe away tears at sentencing. And jurors in Virginia watched Naresh Bhatt buy gloves, cleaning supplies and air freshener in the days after his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, disappeared. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Russell Brand Trial: The Jury Has Now Heard From All Six Women, Sandra Birchmore’s Texts Read in Court, Florida Executes William Reaves
    Oct 21 2026
All six complainants have now given evidence in the trial of Russell Brand, 51, at Southwark Crown Court. On Tuesday the jury heard from the fourth complainant, who alleges he assaulted her at a London radio station in the mid-2000s in front of his entourage; from the sixth, who worked at Channel 4 in 2009 and says colleagues suggested she give him a massage before he put his head in her lap, and who told the jury she reported it to her line manager at the time; and from the fifth, whose recorded police interview was played, alleging rape at his London home after a consensual encounter days earlier. Each was cross-examined by Ian Winter KC, who pressed on inconsistencies and on why none reported at the time. Brand faces seven charges — three of rape, three of sexual assault, one of indecent assault — involving six women between 1999 and 2009. He has pleaded not guilty and denies all of the allegations. Also: jurors in Boston heard years of text messages between Sandra Birchmore and Matthew Farwell, including one in which she told him they were going to be parents. And Florida executed William Reaves, 77, for the 1986 murder of Deputy Richard Raczkowski, 29 — the state’s 18th execution this year. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Sandra Birchmore’s Death Was Ruled a Suicide, Now a Former Detective Is on Trial for Her Murder, Plus the Murdaugh Retrial and a No-Body Cas
    Oct 20 2026
Sandra Birchmore was 23, roughly eight to ten weeks pregnant, and found dead in her Canton, Massachusetts apartment in February 2021, hanging from a duffel bag strap. The state medical examiner ruled it a suicide. Testimony began Oct. 13 in the federal trial of former Stoughton police detective Matthew Farwell, 38, charged with killing a witness — prosecutors allege he began sexually abusing Birchmore when she was 15 and he was 27, through a police Explorers program, and strangled her when she became pregnant and he feared exposure. He faces a mandatory life sentence if convicted and has pleaded not guilty. Defense attorney Kimberley Stevens told jurors Farwell made “regrettable mistakes” but did not kill her, pointing to the original ruling, the absence of his DNA under Birchmore’s fingernails, and FBI meeting notes showing federal examiners initially saw no evidence contradicting the suicide finding. DNA later excluded Farwell as the baby’s father. Also: Alex Murdaugh’s retrial is set for April 5, 2027, in Sumter County, with Judge Debra McCaslin allowing DNA testing but rejecting a defense request she called a fishing expedition. And Naresh Bhatt is on trial in Virginia in the death of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, whose body has never been found. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Timothy Busfield’s Indictment Thrown Out Over Prosecutor Misconduct, Cross-Examination Begins in the Brand Trial, Mistrial for Paitin Fields
    Oct 19 2026
A New Mexico judge threw out the indictment against actor and director Timothy Busfield on Friday, finding the prosecution failed to act in a fair and impartial manner before the grand jury. Judge Joseph Montano ruled that grand jurors asked three times to hear from additional witnesses — who were waiting in the hallway — and that the prosecutor used an unexplained procedure and an incomplete explanation of the subpoena rules, with the practical effect of unilaterally withholding them. Only two witnesses appeared before that grand jury: Busfield and an Albuquerque police detective. Busfield, indicted in February on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child in connection with allegations made on the Albuquerque set of The Cleaning Lady, has denied the allegations throughout; prosecutors say they have not decided whether to seek a new indictment, and the ruling expressly allows them to. Also: the first two complainants in Russell Brand’s trial were cross-examined at Southwark Crown Court; he denies all seven charges. And a judge declared a mistrial in the David Prevatte case in Pender County, North Carolina, after finding jurors discussed information never presented in court. Garret Fisher reports.
