  • Russell Brand Cleared of One Charge on the Judge’s Direction, Replaced by a Lesser Count, Six Still Stand, Birchmore Autopsy Testimony
    Oct 28 2026
Mr Justice Bennathan directed the jury in Russell Brand’s trial on Tuesday to return a not guilty verdict on count two, indecent assault, telling them: “In respect of count two, I have reached the decision that there is insufficient evidence of indecent assault. That is my decision, not yours.” A male juror was selected to deliver the verdict formally. The judge then added a lesser charge arising from the same 2001 allegation — attempted indecent assault — calling it a slightly artificial process; Brand has pleaded not guilty to it. He now faces three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault, and denies all of them. Jurors also heard four police interviews conducted between November 2023 and July 2025, in which Brand read prepared statements describing a very promiscuous past, said he had never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity, and said media and police had publicly invited further allegations that were invented or reimagined. The defence case begins. Also: the medical examiner who first ruled Sandra Birchmore’s death a suicide testified she was told there was nothing to suspect, and denied being pressured to change the certificate. Garret Fisher reports.

  • Chris Brown Avoids Prison With a Suspended Sentence for the London Bottle Attack, Russell Brand’s Defence Begins, the Birchmore Autopsy
    Oct 27 2026
Chris Brown, 37, was sentenced Monday at Southwark Crown Court to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty in July to affray over a February 2023 attack on music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. Judge Tony Baumgartner called it serious public violence and said the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head was plainly dangerous; CCTV played in court showed Brown striking Diaw four times with what prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC described as a heavy, square-shaped tequila bottle. Vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who performs as Hoody Baby, received four months, also suspended. In the same building, the third week of Russell Brand’s trial heard statements from the third complainant’s family and from Brand’s former personal assistant, who described his sexual appetite but told the jury she never witnessed him doing anything against the law. Brand denies all seven charges; the prosecution is expected to rest and the defence to begin. And in Boston, the medical evidence is about to decide the Sandra Birchmore case. Garret Fisher reports.

  • GUILTY: Life Without Parole in Faith Hedgepeth’s Murder 14 Years On, Where the Russell Brand Trial Stands, and Ethan Hauschultz
    Oct 26 2026
A Durham County jury convicted Miguel Salguero-Olivares, 33, on Friday of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree burglary in the 2012 killing of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill sophomore and citizen of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, found beaten to death in her Chapel Hill apartment. The case went unsolved for nine years until a 2021 traffic stop produced a DNA sample that matched the scene. Superior Court Judge Keith Gregory sentenced him to life without parole plus consecutive terms; he is appealing. His defense questioned the forensics and presented no evidence. Also: after two weeks of prosecution evidence at Southwark Crown Court, Garret recaps all six complainants in the Russell Brand trial, the defence case that has emerged, and the decision Brand now faces about whether to testify — he denies all seven charges. And in Wisconsin, Timothy Hauschultz was convicted after an eight-year wait and three rejected plea deals in the 2018 death of seven-year-old Ethan Hauschultz. Garret Fisher reports.
