  • Charlotte Hospital Beds: 686 Requested, 389 Allowed, and a Catch
    Oct 22 2026

Atrium, Novant and a new Duke Health–CaroMont partnership have filed for 686 new hospital beds in Mecklenburg County. The state says the county needs 389. We look at why Charlotte has become a land grab for health systems, and at the catch: the beds the state approved here last year are still held up by an appeal. Plus: the attorney general takes more than 470 complaints about gas prices since the state gas tax was suspended, the Hornets open the season with a win in Brooklyn, and Michelin's 2026 guide to the American South names 17 Charlotte restaurants, including a Bib Gourmand pick on Shamrock Drive.

  • Charlotte Police Name the Officers in the Racist Text Thread
    Oct 20 2026

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have released personnel records for seven officers tied to a racist group chat. Four of the seven share the same hire date, and the department is now reviewing how it hires. We look at what the records show and what they don't: it still isn't public who wrote what, and nobody has been charged over the texts. The district attorney is reviewing past and pending cases, but says he won't make public how many there are. Plus: the Hornets lock up Brandon Miller with a reported $209 million extension ahead of tomorrow's opener, and North Carolina's unemployment rate falls to 3.4 percent. And a world-premiere murder-mystery dinner in the Iron District, with tips on which seats are still easy to get.

  • Charlotte CMS Investigation: A Month Later, Who's Minding the Store?
    Oct 19 2026

A month after Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools fired Superintendent Crystal Hill, the key questions about payments to consultant Raki McGregor are still unanswered, while the SBI, the state auditor and the FBI all investigate. And the board's new legal and compliance office, meant to keep watch, has almost nobody in it. Plus: the Republican share of North Carolina's early vote is down sharply from the last two midterms, alcohol-related ER visits keep climbing in Mecklenburg, the Panthers win in Philadelphia, and how to get in and out of the new Ballantyne Wegmans.

  • Charlotte Police Shooting: Why Nobody Has Seen the Video Yet
    Oct 18 2026

A month after a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer shot and killed Curtis Massey, his family marched Saturday to demand the body camera video. The police chief asked a judge to release it four days after the shooting. In North Carolina, only a judge can release it, and almost four weeks later there's no ruling. We explain how the law works, including a faster path families can use to see the footage privately. Also: CATS Micro on-demand vans reach west Charlotte for $2.20 a ride, King Arthur Baking picks SouthPark for its first North Carolina shop, Charlotte FC ends Philadelphia's win streak with a 2–2 draw, and the Panthers face an Eagles team without Jalen Hurts. Plus: The Great Gatsby's last night at the Belk.

  • Federal Prisoners Return to Charlotte's Jails. What's the Deal Worth?
    Oct 17 2026

Three years after Mecklenburg Sheriff Garry McFadden walked away from the U.S. Marshals over a daily rate, federal detainees are coming back to Charlotte's jails. About 60 move in now, with hundreds more still held out of state. Officials say cases will move faster, but nobody said what the new rate is, and the uptown jail is still crowded. Also today: Mecklenburg's early-voting turnout jumps about 61% over the 2022 midterm, Charlotte FC takes a playoff-race road test at Philadelphia, and a South End original pours its last regular weekend.

  • Charlotte Police Chief Confirms Racist Texts. What Happens Next?
    Oct 16 2026

CMPD Chief Estella Patterson went on the record about the officers' group text: three of the six officers have resigned, a chain-of-command board unanimously recommended firing all six, and she says the thread showed racial, sexual and religious bias. The final firing decision belongs to the Civil Service Board, and defense attorneys say cases these officers built could now be in question. Also today: Atrium Health's $340 million behavioral health plan, including a 168-bed hospital in University City, and why the Southern Christmas Show may be losing its home of nearly 60 years. Plus the Charlotte Chalk Art Festival in NoDa this weekend, free.

  • Morgan Robinson: The Cocktail That Moved Charlotte's Battle of the Babes to Tears
    Oct 15 2026

Morgan Robinson founded Hospitality Coalition, HoCo for short, the Charlotte group behind Battle of the Babes, a cocktail competition for women bartenders that held its sixth year on Sept. 27 at Merchant & Trade in Uptown. In this episode of Five Questions, she talks about why she built HoCo, the winning cocktail that moved the room to tears, why North Carolina's liquor laws make life harder for bars, what Charlotte's hospitality scene needs next, and where she sends friends for a drink: Babe Cave in LoSo and Idlewild in NoDa. Morgan answered in writing; her words are read by host Steve Bouboulis.

  • Charlotte's Atrium Goes Out of Network for the State Health Plan
    Oct 15 2026

The State Health Plan is moving most Atrium hospitals and doctors' offices out of network starting next year. It's the day after a judge refused to block Atrium's offer to cover deductibles and coinsurance for state employees. About 80,000 members use Atrium, and their costs now depend on a hospital's promise the plan says it doesn't trust. Meanwhile, the treasurer warns premiums could rise up to $50 a month in 2028 for everyone. Also today: six Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers reportedly cited for termination over racist texts, airport cabin cleaners strike after a co-worker's death, Charlotte FC falls at Columbus, and a free corgi racing championship this Saturday.
