• Hitting a milestone: 50 Episodes of Brothers, Sisters, Strangers Podcast
    Jan 20 2026

50 episodes! Fern and Ali-John have reached a significant milestone, and here we reflect on our initial meeting, our video podcast, and our joint commitment to the sibling estrangement community. We marvel at the synergy between us, take stock of what we’ve done since the podcast's inception, and explore what we hope to do in the future. Our video podcast attempts to rectify the double isolation many estranged siblings face -- from a family member and then from a support system (since the topic is so stigmatized). We will continue to empower viewers by offering insights and comfort on this under-acknowledged topic. Upcoming episodes will focus on specific case studies, relationships with nieces and nephews after estrangement, and religion and cutoffs. Stay tuned!

  • How Prince Harry's Memoir Reduces the Stigma of Sibling Estrangement
    Jan 20 2026

Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare, is not only breaking sales records; it’s also blowing the lid off of the stigma of sibling estrangement. In his book, Harry reveals the difficulties he has had with his brother, William, and how the relationship eventually devolved into a complete estrangement. Few are willing to admit they have no relationship with their own brother or sister, as friends and family are judgmental; many blame the estranged siblings who choose to protect themselves by cutting off family members. But in this book, Harry finds the courage to take on the stigma and defend his choice to cut off. Harry’s story reminds us that sibling estrangement cuts across all classes and cultures, and sometimes we must take drastic measures to ensure our safety and survival. This episode explores Harry’s desperate family situation and what it would take for the brothers to reconcile.

  • Toxic Positivity, Gaslighting, and Sibling Estrangement
    Jan 20 2026

Many people aren’t aware of the concept of toxic positivity, which is a subtle form of gaslighting and manipulation. This pattern of behavior rejects or glosses over negative emotions to project an upbeat, positive image. Especially evident at this time of year -- on holiday cards and social media -- toxic positivity can be a kind of group gaslighting that creates a false narrative of the happy family. This pattern also can become a form of censorship, as no one is allowed or encouraged to address troubling issues. Ultimately, relationships in a family culture that engages in toxic positivity may become stuck in a superficial, limited connection, resulting in distance between relatives and even estrangement. This intriguing episode explores the little-known pattern of toxic positivity in a family culture and how to address it.

  • How to Respond when a Narcissistic Sibling Injures?
    Jan 20 2026

How do we respond when a narcissistic sibling erupts in anger? The impulse is to erupt in anger, however, that’s not the best strategy to deescalate the situation. It’s almost impossible to win with a narcissist, so it’s best to avoid a power struggle. This illuminating episode provides guidance on what to do in these volatile, vulnerable moments when a sibling lashes out. There is a tendency to personalize these angry reactions, but actually, it's important that we don't take this on and don't personalize their nasty provocation. Remain calm and focus on your breath before you react. If you become emotional, you will bait them and arouse their defenses. It's equally important not to people-please or enable, but learn to defuse the situation by being diplomatic. It's one thing to find your voice and speak up, but it's also important to yield in some circumstances to buy peace. These are just a few tips that Ali-John and Fern discuss in this conversation about narcissistic injury.

  • The Sibling Estrangement Journal - Interview with Fern Schumer Chapman on her new Workbook
    Jan 20 2026

This episode explores the new writing workbook -- The Sibling Estrangement Journal: A Guided Exploration of Your Experience through Writing -- that provides an opportunity to reach powerful realizations, gain insight, and discover resilience and truth – all between the self and the page. Sibling estrangement cuts across all classes and cultures, yet many don’t want to discuss this stigmatized topic and not everyone can afford on-going therapy. Studies show that writing from the heart for 20 minutes a day helps to make sense of emotions and to construct meaning from experience, contributing to both emotional and physical well-being. This workbook, which explores important topics in sibling estrangement and poses important questions about your experience, offers a different approach to self-knowledge, improvement, and empowerment.

  • Narcissists, Flying Monkeys, and Sibling Estrangement
    Jan 18 2026

What is a flying monkey? In narcissistic families, flying monkeys serve as proxies or pawns for the narcissist by guilt-tripping, shaming, and gaslighting an unsuspecting sibling or victim. This dynamic often occurs in large families where one sibling dominates and then employs others to do his/her dirty work. Flying monkeys are a kind of enabler who often love drama. He or she rubber stamps the narcissist’s behavior and, in the process, avoids narcissistic abuse. When a sibling establishes healthy boundaries, the narcissist will rage and then employ flying monkeys in another attempt to control victims. In this episode, learn how to respond to these manipulative people.

  • Personalization and Sibling Estrangement
    Jan 18 2026

What are our emotional responsibilities in a family? In other words, what is my issue and what is my sibling's issue? Patterns of personalization -- where someone takes on something that isn’t theirs -- are set in childhood. It’s a type of over responsibility that manifests as a need to give order to an otherwise unexplainable situation. When it comes to sibling estrangement, personalization often is based upon incomplete information, which can lead to rumination. We become our own worst critics, and rumination can be its own cage. In fact, we can be the target of someone else’s internal battle; a sibling may project his or her own failures and shortcomings onto a sibling. Personalization is an interpersonal process that can be curbed. This episode explores strategies to reduce personalization and rumination.
