  • Hitting a milestone: 50 Episodes of Brothers, Sisters, Strangers Podcast
    Jan 20 2026

50 episodes! Fern and Ali-John have reached a significant milestone, and here we reflect on our initial meeting, our video podcast, and our joint commitment to the sibling estrangement community. We marvel at the synergy between us, take stock of what we’ve done since the podcast's inception, and explore what we hope to do in the future. Our video podcast attempts to rectify the double isolation many estranged siblings face -- from a family member and then from a support system (since the topic is so stigmatized). We will continue to empower viewers by offering insights and comfort on this under-acknowledged topic. Upcoming episodes will focus on specific case studies, relationships with nieces and nephews after estrangement, and religion and cutoffs. Stay tuned!

  • How Prince Harry's Memoir Reduces the Stigma of Sibling Estrangement
    Jan 20 2026

Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare, is not only breaking sales records; it’s also blowing the lid off of the stigma of sibling estrangement. In his book, Harry reveals the difficulties he has had with his brother, William, and how the relationship eventually devolved into a complete estrangement. Few are willing to admit they have no relationship with their own brother or sister, as friends and family are judgmental; many blame the estranged siblings who choose to protect themselves by cutting off family members. But in this book, Harry finds the courage to take on the stigma and defend his choice to cut off. Harry’s story reminds us that sibling estrangement cuts across all classes and cultures, and sometimes we must take drastic measures to ensure our safety and survival. This episode explores Harry’s desperate family situation and what it would take for the brothers to reconcile.

  • Toxic Positivity, Gaslighting, and Sibling Estrangement
    Jan 20 2026

Many people aren’t aware of the concept of toxic positivity, which is a subtle form of gaslighting and manipulation. This pattern of behavior rejects or glosses over negative emotions to project an upbeat, positive image. Especially evident at this time of year -- on holiday cards and social media -- toxic positivity can be a kind of group gaslighting that creates a false narrative of the happy family. This pattern also can become a form of censorship, as no one is allowed or encouraged to address troubling issues. Ultimately, relationships in a family culture that engages in toxic positivity may become stuck in a superficial, limited connection, resulting in distance between relatives and even estrangement. This intriguing episode explores the little-known pattern of toxic positivity in a family culture and how to address it.
