Derek Sheen! Comedian! Friend! Delight! More!

Derek and I have a great talk! You can have a great listen!

And here's some more about Derek and his newest hour of comedy, "Unrelatable":

"As often as his crowd seems to brace for impact, they spend more time howling at his audacity. Sheen can be crude, but he's never alienating or upsetting" - Chicago Reader

Derek Sheen is a cuddly mess of insecurities, a human hug and a one-of-a-kind storyteller. He has amassed a loyal fanbase after years of touring with such acts as Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo and Brian Posehn who said, "Derek is so funny and smart it makes me mad." Sheen has been described as audacious, irreverent and a "human hug" by acclaimed author Lindy West. His ability to mine humor from the dark underbelly of the human condition has made him a favorite of comedy nerds around the globe.

On Unrelatable Derek Sheen tackles the creeping indignities of aging, chronic social awkwardness, and the strange comfort of feeling out of step with everyone. Through dark autobiographical stories and irreverent, meticulously crafted bits, he makes an unusually compelling case that discomfort is pretty universal.

Derek Sheen has been writing and performing comedy since his late teens. But after 4 full-length hour releases, a string of tremendous personal losses befell him followed by 2 years of lockdown that he says "changed [him] fundamentally on a molecular basis." This was the moment that comedy became less about joke-writing and more about mining humor from real-life tragedy, a transition that brought out a more genuine version of himself. "This hour is the most honest and genuine thing I've ever written," he said. "I hope the audience can laugh with me at the darkness and absurdity of being a human being, because as uniquely awkward as our individual journeys seem, we are all, in the end, relatable."

Watch Unrelateable on on Blonde Medicine's YouTube channel, and enjoy the audio album version wherever albums are sold or heard.

And of course, listen to him on THIS VERY PODCAST! Enjoy!

Jamel Johnson! Comedian! Podcaster! Friend! Delight! More!

We have a great conversation! you can have a great listen!

Jamel's newest album is called Mid-Range, shot live in one take at Sports Drink in New Orleans.

    More about Jamel:

LA-based comedian Jamel Johnson has been in the entertainment world for 16 years. He made a name for himself on the D.C. comedy scene through a hard-to-hate mixture of non-threatening yelling, weird stories and impressively specific but not alienating sports and music references. Jamel lives for the laugh from the one dude in the back of the room who also watches too much SportsCenter. After making his television debut in 2016 on Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City, Jamel now performs regularly all across America. Jamel has also been on Comedy Central's Stand Up Featuring, and Vulture's Comedians You Should Know.

On Mid-Range, Jamel brings levity to serious topics like the racial biases of artificial intelligence, the ways men encourage toxic masculinity, and the pros and cons of being a fat boyfriend. Of course it wouldn't be Jamel's comedy without some hyper-specific references, this time about phone game ads, basketball, ice hockey, and living with an iPod Touch instead of a phone.

  • 445: Arj Barker and The Mind Field
    Aug 31 2026

Arj Barker! Comedian! Actor! Friend! Delight! More!

Arj's new comedy album The Mind Field is out now from Blonde Medicine!

We have a great talk and you can have a great listen!

    ABOUT ARJ BARKER:

Barker started his comedy career in the 90s as a dare but quickly dropped out of college to focus on the craft. Through the years he developed his distinct performance style, characterized by heavy sarcasm, absurd logic, and a stage persona that blends unwavering confidence with hilarious ignorance. After 35 years of late-night stand-up sets, acting and writing for the stage and on TV, and headlining shows of all sizes, he remains a beloved, globe-trotting powerhouse in the contemporary comedy landscape.

On The Mind Field, Arj Barker encourages the audience to reflect on questions insufficiently explored by science: What is consciousness? Is it stored in the brain or is there a bigger reality somewhere beyond our minds? "Having lost my best friend quite suddenly a few years ago, these questions took on more urgency, and this stand up that formed around that." says Arj.

On the album he also explores equally important topics like meditation, masturbation, and travelling over an hour to eat mediocre pizza. Barker wraps up the album with a song about drinking too much coffee in Australia, which he brings to life with a harmonica, inspiring the audience to sing along.

    MORE ABOUT ARJ BARKER:

Acclaimed stand-up comedian and actor Arj Barker's early career took shape in San Francisco during the early 90s, where he hosted a regular open-mic night at Café Nuvo. His breakthrough arrived in 1997 when he won the prestigious Perrier Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He became a frequent fixture on late-night TV, making multiple stand-up appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show, and The Late Show with David Letterman. He has hosted many Comedy Central Presents specials, co-written and starred in the Off-Broadway parody show The Marijuana-Logues in 2004 and joined the cast of the hit HBO sitcom Flight of the Conchords in 2007.

For decades Barker has been a headline regular and record-breaking ticket seller at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Adelaide Fringe. Now living in Australia, Barker has achieved monumental status as an adopted superstar there. His widespread appeal across Oceania has been bolstered by regular appearances on major Australian television programs such as Thank God You're Here, Rove, and Spicks and Specks. He has released several top-selling comedy albums and live specials, including the ARIA award winning DVD Organic and co-wrote and starred in The Nut Farm in 2024.
