• What I've Learned .....
    Oct 18 2026

Sometimes, it's never really just about the show.

Since 2013, I've seen what can happen when women come together to enjoy theatre, live entertainment and a little time away from everyday life.

I've learned that people can be going through far more than we ever see on the surface. Life changes. Unexpected twists and turns. New beginnings. Moments when the future looks nothing like we imagined.

And sometimes, saying yes to a theatre trip, joining a group or simply getting out of the house can be the beginning of something you didn't even realise you needed.

There are things I've learned along the way that I never expected when I first started Culture Calendar.

In this podcast, I'm sharing some of what I have learned, and why I believe that no matter what life throws at us - we don't need to navigate change alone.

Sometimes, the smallest step towards doing something for yourself can open the door to wonderful experiences.

And if you're in a chapter of life that feels uncertain right now, you're just turning a new page or chapter, and there is so much to look forward to.

  • They actually changed it!
    Oct 15 2026

Something that happened when an audience member went beyond a quiet grumble 🎭

From interval queue chaos to an 80th birthdaycelebrant forced to stand for 30 minutes before entering the auditorium—our live theatre spaces can improve things for everyone.

In this episode, I share how just 2 minutes completing a post-show survey led to change on my next visit.

Your voice matters. If we don't tell them, they can't fix it! 🎟️✨

  • They didn't want to leave, but they had no choice
    Oct 11 2026

With a theatre audience of more than 3,500 people, the actions of just two people brought this particular performance to a standstill - as cast members left the stage.

The theatre could accept no further disruption, and the guilty parties were forcibly removed from the theatre, prompting huge cheers from fellow audience members.

But the damage was already done. A performance that should have been remembered for the talent on stage will instead be remembered by many for the interruptions that stopped the show.

When does individual behaviour cross the line and spoil a shared experience? And what about the performers and thousands of people who paid to witness a spectacular finale?

I am certain that I am not alone in thinking that live entertainment is a shared experience - usually a wonderful one, and respect matters.

  • Join the debate: | Mobile Phones in Theatre & Live Entertainment
    Oct 3 2026

We all know that using a mobile phone during a theatre performance can distract performers and fellow audience members. But what if the theatre itself gave explicit permission to capture a moment after the performance has ended?

A photograph of the cast taking their final bow.
A few seconds of video capturing a closing song.
A little reminder of a great night out.

I've attended three performances where theatres specifically allowed — and in some cases encouraged audiences to capture the curtain call. What I witnessed was interesting, and it made me question whether there could be a middle ground.

Concerts can be very different, with audiences sometimes encouraged to capture the moment and share their experience.

    So where do you stand?

Should theatres allow photographs and short videos of the final bow? Is it good free marketing for the production — or should the no-phone rule remain absolute?

Cat Blanchett recently appealed to audiences not to use their mobile phone during a National Theatre Live performance, but perhaps wait until the curtain call.

  • Did you connect or was it just me | Moulin Rouge The Musical
    Sep 30 2026

The moment you walk into the auditorium for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, there is no denying the spectacle. The atmosphere, the design and the sheer visual impact immediately set the scene.

But what did you really think of the show?

I thought it was good. I enjoyed it. And yet, somehow from all the hype I had seen ... I kind of expected more.

Perhaps it was the emotional connection I was looking for — that feeling that takes a musical from impressive to unforgettable.

The interesting thing is, I wouldn't hesitate to see Moulin Rouge! The Musical again, because I wanted to know what I was missing.

    I'm genuinely curious about.

  • Is it weird to go to theatre alone? What no-one tells you
    Sep 27 2026

Ever wanted to go to the theatre, concert or live entertainment but nobody wants to come with you?

What do you actually do, when nobody wants to see the same show?

    What should I wear?

What seat should I book when I'm booking for one?

It might feel a little daunting for some, but these are just some of the questions I have heard time and time again during my years of running Culture Calendar Theatre and live entertainment trips.

But the truth is - going alone doesn't need to feel lonely.

You might be single, an empty nester, married, divorced, widowed or separated, or spending all of your time working from home...

And sometimes, you have a partner who simply doesn't share your enthusiasm for theatre, concerts or live entertainment.

So what happens? You don't go.

You miss the show. You miss the experience. And sometimes, without even realising it, you put your own enjoyment at the bottom of your own list.

That's exactly why I created the Culture Calendar Solo Theatre Goer's Guide — a virtual handholding digital friend designed to:

    • help you feel more confident about going on your own
    • answer the questions you might want to ask
    • and help you make the most of the whole day built around a two-hour live performance.

If the prospect of booking a solo theatre performance has been holding you back - then we're here for you, when you are!

  • You can plan to the nth degree .... and things can still go wrong
    Sep 24 2026

Planning the perfect day out to a concert sounds simple… until it isn’t.

In this episode of Beyond the Spotlight UK, I'm talking about a much anticipated performance and plan to see the incredible Andrea Bocelli — a spectacular concert with fantastic special guests and a night that absolutely delivered on stage.

But getting to that moment was another story!

From carefully pre-planning dinner and drinks beforehand, to the little things that didn't quite go according to plan, this is a reminder that even the most organised concert day can unravel before you reach your seat, during and after!

From little awkward moment at the concert itself… to the return coach trip home!

Was it a disaster? Not really.

Was it frustrating? Just a little! 😂

But was the concert, and infact everything that was built around that performance worth it? 100%.

This is an honest, funny look at the reality behind a concert day out — the planning, the expectations, the unexpected mishaps and why sometimes the best memories come from the things that don't go to plan.

If you love live entertainment, concerts, Andrea Bocelli, audience experiences, concert planning and real-life stories from theatre and live events, you'll probably recognise yourself somewhere in this one.

Beyond the Spotlight UK explores the people, performances and experiences behind live entertainment — from theatre and musical theatre to concerts, performers and the audiences who make the experience what it is.

  • Theatre Etiquette
    Sep 22 2026

Is a five-star theatre review enough to guarantee you'll love a show?

In this episode of Beyond the Spotlight UK, we talk about theatre etiquette, audience behaviour and the live theatre experience — and why choosing the right show is about more than reviews and ratings.

Drawing on many years of attending performances, planning theatre trips and experiencing live entertainment, we're talking about what can make or break a theatre experience, and why sometimes the audience can impact your experience as well as what is happening on stage.
