  • Episode 12: The Ladykillers
    Jun 30 2022

This week it’s time for one of Tom Hanks’ most notorious misfires, and one of our hosts might have at least a slight defense of it. Ryan and Mitchell are joined by Dan Mecca (The B-Side) to discuss Joel and Ethan Coen’ 2004 remake of The Ladykillers. Discussion includes Hanks’ Colonel Sanders performance, the Cannes award-winning work of Irma P. Hall, how the film is generally considered the Coens’ worst, and for some reason a major detour into the career of Jack O’Connell.

  • Episode 11: Road to Perdition
    Jun 28 2022

There is only one guarantee. None of us on this podcast will see heaven. This week, we’re joined by Conor O’Donnell (The B-Side) to break down Sam Mendes’ elegiac gangster father-son road trip drama Road to Perdition. We discuss perhaps the darkest role of Tom Hanks’ career, the high and low filmography of Sam Mendes, the incredible supporting performances of Paul Newman, Daniel Craig and Jude Law, and plenty more.

  • Episode 10: Cast Away (with Jay Ledbetter)
    Jun 21 2022

This week we are joined by friend of the show Jay Ledbetter (Extra Film podcast), who’s known Ryan longer but is better friends with Mitchell, we swear. Jay rides hard for all things Finch as we center the episode on Tom Hanks’ reteaming with his Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis for 2000’s Cast Away (not Castaway). We discuss the film’s fascinating, daring production schedule, how Hanks was the one who came up with this idea and kicked it into high gear, and how it may just be the most committed and passionate performance of his career (and maybe his best). We also for some reason spend a lot of time talking about the awards prospects of the Chris Pine thriller The Contractor.

  • Episode 9: Saving Private Ryan (with Slim)
    Jun 14 2022

This week we are joined by podcast extraordinaire Slim (The Letterboxd Show, 70mm) to discuss Steven Spielberg’s 1998 World War II drama Saving Private Ryan. We hear about Slim’s early love of The Money Pit, along with plenty of talk on the phenomenal lineup of very ’90s dudes who appear alongside Hanks in the film, the massive appreciation the veteran community had for it upon release, and where it slots into Hanks’ run of guys who are just good at their jobs.

  • Episode 8: Toy Story Franchise
    Jun 7 2022

You’ve got some friends in us! In this week’s episode of Acting Out, we’re doing things a little differently. Rather than focusing on one film per usual, we’re tackling the entire Toy Story franchise, assessing how the series develops over its 25 year run and what Tom Hanks brings to the iconic role of Woody. We also get several camp stories from Ryan, a shift in Mitchell’s Toy Story rankings, and maybe even a visit from Randy Newman.

  • Episode 7: Apollo 13
    May 31 2022

Let’s go to the moon! Or… maybe not. On this week’s episode of Acting Out, we’re talking about Ron Howard’s 1995 space drama Apollo 13. We discuss how this is (easily) Howard’s best film, question why he hasn’t made more films like this, examine the film’s portrayal of America’s relationship with astronauts and the space race, and dissect a very fine and somewhat underrated Tom Hanks performance at the film’s center.

  • Episode 6: Forrest Gump
    May 24 2022

Acting Out is like a box of chocolates, and this week we’re giving you a dose of 1994’s Forrest Gump. Teaming up with Robert Zemeckis for the first time, we discuss how the film was such an unstoppable juggernaut that it netted Tom Hanks his second Best Actor win at the Oscars in consecutive years. We also get into some of the questionable decisions that have led to the film not aging well, what about the film still does work, and whether or not it’s actually four hours long or just feels like it.

  • Episode 5: Philadelphia
    May 17 2022

On this episode of Acting Out, we discuss Jonathan Demme’s 1993 drama Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer with AIDS fighting discrimination and Denzel Washington as the bigot who defends him. We talk about Hanks’ first Oscar winning performance, whether Washington is secretly better (and the lead), the absolute barnstorming success of the film critically and commercially, and the unique perspective Demme brings as a director that allows Philadelphia to be far more interesting cinematically than the boring Oscar bait it appears to be on paper.
