I had a vague idea that The old curiosity shop was like Oliver Twist : a depressing, badly written novel. I couldn't have been more mistaken. It certainly isn't as complex and deep as, say, Little Dorrit or Bleak house, it's a sort of very disturbing melodrama with extreme characters, and it's very enjoyable. Anto L'esser is superlative in his reading.
