Great Content - Meditations are at the End

Would you listen to The Mindful Way Through Depression again? Why?

I really enjoyed this book and found the content very helpful.

MEDITATIONS ARE THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not necessarily but I almost did.

Any additional comments?

The meditations that other commentators complain are not included are actually the last 6 or so chapters of the audio book. Those who complain about the lack of meditations either purchased a different version or didn't bother to listen to the whole book.

Thankful to have found this audible

The authors are sharing their years of experience in a ways that are helpful, digestible, and useful. I have listened to segments of this audiobook everyday for nearly three weeks, as is suggested by the authors, and I plan to continue to listen for at least another three weeks. This book has brought about so much good that I am thankful to have stumbled upon it. If you are interested in this topic and/or suffer from depression I believe you should take a chance and get it. I'm glad I did.

it works

Williams and Zinn both have lovely voices, so listening was very pleasant. I was already familiar with meditation, so I took to it easily. I would recommend this program to anyone. all you need is some patience and a few minutes a day. The print version has a CD so the tracks are referred to by number that doesn't correspond to the chapter numbers. you can figure it out pretty easy but it is something to figure out.

I've struggled with anxiety, depression and ADHD..

Where does The Mindful Way Through Depression rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The absolute best purchase I've made.

What did you like best about this story?

The practical tools that you can apply immediately to live a happier life.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

nope

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book has changed my life already. Road rage no more, I can focus while spending time with my family. I smile more, which I hardly ever did and if I did it was usually a fake smile to avoid the questions of "are you ok?" "is something wrong." The narrators stories were so easy to relate to and his insight from the stories makes you just open up and be hopeful for getting well.

Any additional comments?

Buy it, you will thank yourself for it.

Amazing! I recommend to everyone I know.

I love this book for several reasons. It explains why we have reoccurring depression, in easy to understand language and with scientific back-up. This book explains it in a way that can help others, who do not battle depression, so that they can understand. Even if you don't believe in mediation, the book is worth it just for the explanation.
The mediation exercises are amazing though and I highly recommend them too. This is not a miracle cure....it takes hard work and daily dedication. I've listened to it many times and have even now purchased the workbook.
I have been diagnosed with mayor depressive disorder and have battled major depression, off and on, for 25 years.

This book is a life changer

Where does The Mindful Way Through Depression rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the books that has changed my life. It teaches the listener some very powerful skills to take control of one's current state. To help us realize that stress, anxiety, and depression are often allowing thoughts of past mistakes or future concerns to control the current, and thus rob us of the joy of living right now.

What other book might you compare The Mindful Way Through Depression to and why?

As this is a self help book, the closest books may be teaching company lectures.

What did you learn from The Mindful Way Through Depression that you would use in your daily life?

I learned that the mindfulness exercises are true exercises. I learn from doing them. Like exercises, it takes time to become good at them

Any additional comments?

If the listener struggles with being controlled by their emotions, this may be a great solution. It certainly helped me.

A condensed edition of a superlative work

I own and have read the print version of this book, to which I give an unqualified five stars! An excellent and concise introduction to Mindfulness (for anyone, not just those who are depressed), but also a great comfort to read and full of great wisdom and practical advice.

The Audio version of the book has apparently been adapted for that medium — and is a lot shorter than the printed book. The recording refers to various tracks of the “Guided Practice Sessions,” which may be confusing to those who come to this recording. In fact, the seven “tracks” that are referred to correspond to chapters 5 through 11 of the Audible product — but this is not stated anywhere. I know this only because I own the print edition of the book, which includes a Compact Disc with the seven tracks referred to in the first four chapters of the Audible book.

I found this an excellent “refresher” for what I learned years ago from the print edition, and I selected it so that I could enjoy listening to it while taking walks. And the voice of Mark Williams (narrator of the first four chapters) is wonderfully calming. It makes a good companion edition for those who, like me, have found the book helpful — or perhaps for those who may be curious to check it out. But I wouldn’t recommend this as a stand-alone product. By all means, obtain the printed version of this book, and spend some time with it, underlining and highlighting the wisdom you will find there. And then, listen to the Audible recording when you want to refresh your good memories of the book!

great book!

this book is a very good resource for learning how to get out of depression mindfully. i highly reccommend it to anyone trying to learn the practice of surrenderring into the moment. the best i have listened to/read on the subject. very practical and truly gets into the details of "how to" not just the comcepts. probably a book one would listen to multiple times even just for the meditations.

Tracks vs. Chapters

The narration is great. And I have found the chapters that are the guided meditations. But how on earth am I to know which chapters are which tracks? I have no idea which exercise is which when he refers to track 4,5,6 etc. I'm lost. They aren't labeled and if you listen to them they don't tell you what exercise it is.

Essential to overcoming depression/low moods

As a mental health professional, I have found this book very effective both in my personal journey in recognizing and overcome thought patterns that lead to low moods and in my work in guiding individuals with diagnosed depressive and even anxiety disorders. This book does not read like a professional textbook. The authors use accessible and engaging language combined with relevant stories along with a concrete prescription for a program to help lead a more content life. The underlying philosophy of mindfulness is described in a secular and universal way that does not conflict with any belief system and only enough to give power to the specific meditative practices. #depression #transformation #mindfulness #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

This audio book has been incredibly helpful in facing depression. MBCT is science based and proven. Take the actual 8 week course if you can alongside listening to and reading the book.

hit and miss

I really like this author, and I have another audiobook by him and a book, and planning to read more books by him. However, whilst I totally loved his other audiobook, this one gets from me a slight lesser rating because I detest Zinn's voice. Williams should have done the meditation sections too, as he's much closer to a pro speaker....I am really fussy about hearing speech, I don't want to hear cheeks and tongues slapping and mucus build up in the throat :)

UPDATE: a year or two later, I conclude that this mindfulness thingy is nothing I had not done in the past, and it is overrated and simplistic. Too long to give details here. I prefer to study things like Seneca, the Dokkodo, Hagakure, and Schopenhauer. This is not to say that mindfulness isn't good, just that it's overrated. I liked the sunset and the sunrise before, the breeze etc. The problem is that 'mindfulness' presupposes that people never have done these things before. And anyhow, they don't address other important things. As usual in the West, the understanding of these ancient philosophies is only partial, and tainted with what Kenji Tokitsu calls: 'current day thinking'.

Having said all that, maybe you DO need to know about mindfulness. It's easy to think "yeah, I get it.". You probably do not. I do highly recommend the books and audiobooks by Mark Williams, but the ones done on his own.

Depressing

I returned it. It actually made me feel worse (more depressed). Also, the audio quality is very poor, which is typical of Sounds True. And Jon Kabat Zinn should not narrate his own books. He is a terrible speaker.

lifesaver

This is more than a book, its a very effective Mindfulness training programme that trains and supports your technique over time. I have practised meditation techniques for over fifteen years, attended workshops and read extensively on the subject, I have learnt that anxiety will always catch up with me, but I believe this programme can empower through regular practice and the meditations included are all you need to reconnect to awareness.

A useful consolidation of ideas that are out there

Ultimately this book consolidated a set of useful mindfulness exercises, but ones that are pretty much already out there in the public domain in one form of another. It also consolidates the ideas that underpin the practice of mindfulness for depression. This includes a detailed, considered and convincing account of how mindfulness can contribute to better mental health and well thought-out descriptions of anxious and depressive thought processes in this context. However, in terms of self-treatment through mindfulness, there’s little that’s new here beyond systematically practising different mindfulness exercises such as body scans. The benefit of the product is to package this all up in one place. There still seems to be a gap to fill in terms of how self-administered CBT exercises could integrate with the mindfulness exercises perhaps, and even, an analysis of where and how other approaches (talking therapies etc) might integrate or add complimentary value. So from a user perspective there’s still a bit of silo-perpetuation here. Nonetheless the book/audio exercises add a useful tool for helping to avoid relapse.
