I’m about halfway through the novel. I’m “reading” it in the original language, even though I’m not a native speaker. That said, I’m used to listening to many other authors in their original language, narrated by different readers, so I don’t think the language itself is the issue. I simply find this story surprisingly difficult to follow.

The ancient storyline, in particular, was painfully dull for me. I can’t tell whether that’s due to the author’s deliberately slow, carefully crafted pacing or simply the narrator’s performance. As accomplished as he may be, his voice has a very distinctive quality. It sounds weary, almost slurred at times. I also wonder whether the recording itself lacks the clarity and crispness I’ve come to expect from other audiobooks.

The overall effect is a monotony that can wear down even the most patient listener and the most adventurous reader. To me, the narrator doesn’t seem like the best fit for this story, even though, paradoxically, he shares its mood and temperament. That affinity, however, doesn’t necessarily translate into an effective listening experience and ends up amplifying its more demanding aspects.
